Information about Dafydd

I`ve been a lecturer in history for the last five years at the University of Reading, where I was awarded my PhD in History in 2018. My specialism is modern American political history, but I have taught everything from medieval English history to post-colonial global history. I am currently researching American national security policy, but my university teaching stretches across the entire curriculum. I also teach at St Mary`s University, Twickenham, where my teaching focuses on race, politics and culture in the United States.

My first book will be published next year by Palgrave Macmillan, while I have publications in the Oxford Research Encyclopedia, the Journal of Intelligence History, and History journal. My research has been supported by the Rothermere American Institute at the University of Oxford, Columbia University in New York, the Institute of Historical Research, the Royal Historical Association, the Gerald R Ford Presidential Foundation, and the American Politics Group.

I really enjoy teaching - it really gives me immense pleasure to see students develop their writing and analytical skills through the engagement with history.

I have two teenage children, one of which is studying history at GCSE, while the other is studying A-Level history, so I a fully aware of the demands of KS3 and A-Level curriculum as well as degree level.

Availability: I`m available late afternoon and early evenings most days during the week, and all day on weekends during term time and during school/university holidays.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: I have been teaching in Higher Education for five years both undergraduates and graduates. I have also given a number of visiting lectures to sixth form students around the South East. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have a full DBS clearance.

I teach in a variety of areas of history, although American history is my specialty. I`ve given lectures both in the UK and in the US. I`ve taught large groups of students (100+), led small group seminars of 6-20 students, and given one-to-one tutorials, including dissertation supervision.

I have written and taught courses on 20th century American history, US presidents, the civil rights movement, the 1960s, race and ethnicity in the United States, the FBI, and the Cold War including American foreign policy. I have also taught on broad survey courses that involved medieval history, the British Empire, and cultural history. My courses tend to be oversubscribed and receive very positive feedback from the students.
