Information about Chris

I am a freelance musician and music educator based in tonbridge, Kent.

I am a versatile low brass (trombone, tuba, euphonium) specialist, arranger and composer and it has lead me to work around the world with various artists such as Jamie Cullum, Tinie Tempah, Tinchy Strider, Wiz Kid, Cherys Matthews and to perform at venues and festivals such as the BBC Proms at the Royal Albert Hall, The Excel Arena, The Festival of Light, The Queen Elizabeth Hall, The South Bank Centre, and Ronnie Scotts Jazz Club.

I work as a key educator with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra (NYJO), running workshops with local music services, teaching about improvisation and playing in ensembles.

I have an 2:1 undergraduate degree with honors from Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance studying Tenor Trombone/Jazz/Arranging/Composition/Orchestration. And obtained QTS (qualified teacher status) in 2021.

I work as a peripatetic teacher covering any of the following instruments:
Trombone (tenor/bass), tuba, sousaphone, euphonium, baritone, trumpet, flugelhorn, cornet, drum kit, music theory, jazz improvisation, composition and arranging, music production using Logic Pro X and score production using Sibelius.

I also can provide curriculum based tuition for music at KS1-5 anywhere from nursery age to A Level and I am able to teach and facilitate students that want to take the Edexcel Music Technology A level (a subject that is very rarely provided for in school).

Availability: I am very flexible with my teaching hours and I am happy to work to find a time that suits you best. Monday daytimes, Thursday mornings work best.

Willing to travel: 15 miles

Experience: 6 years as head of brass teaching at Radnor House, Sevenoaks (independent school for ages 2-18).

11 years as an educational ambassador for the National Youth Jazz Orchestra

2 years working as a classroom music teacher teaching from nursery age up to A level.

Chris is an outstanding music tutor, very good at explaining and expanding my son’s knowledge. We couldn’t be happier as Chris is our son’s favourite tutor. We would highly recommend him.

Chris tutored me at my studio and was excellent - punctual, patient, thorough and knowledgeable. I am very happy with him and we have an on-going arrangement. I commend him to any other Sibelius student. Thank you. Best wishes, Janet Harbison
