Information about Cathal
I am a qualified and experienced ICT teacher with a solid background in computing and education.
I have a great passion for computing and I thoroughly enjoy teaching programming and other technical aspects. Students have frequently complimented me upon my ability to quickly help them resolve any issues they have had with their coursework.
I studied for a degree in education at Cardiff University, earning a 2:1. A few years later I completed a masters degree in object oriented software development. After this degree, I worked for five years for IBM as a software developer and tester before leaving in 2003 to train to be an ICT teacher.
Availability: I am available from Monday to Thursday between 4pm and 8pm, and also on Sunday afternoons between 2pm and 6pm.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have deep familiarity with the requirements of GCSE Computing (OCR), GCSE ICT (Edexcel), A Level Computing (OCR) and both A Level ICT and Applied ICT (Edexcel). I have also taught BTEC ICT at both level 2 and level 3. During my teaching career I am very proud to have a 100% pass rate in all the classes I have taught at GCSE, and at both AS and A2 level.
With regard to technical skills, my main professional experience before becoming a teacher was programming with Java. As a teacher I have taught Python, Javascri pt, HTML, CSS and Visual Basic. I have additionally taught Scratch, AppInventor and Game Maker.
I am a very organised teacher. I always aim to have well-planned, stimulating lessons where students are engaged and suitably challenged.
I constantly reflect upon my teaching practice, exploring ways to boost student engagement and attainment.
