Information about Amanda

ABOUT ME
I am a highly experienced law teacher having worked as a full-time senior lecturer for 25 years at a large law school rated ‘Gold’ in the UK government’s Teaching Excellence Framework for Excellent Teaching and Learning. I have also been an `external examiner` for two leading law schools in the UK. I am a highly experienced marker and moderator, so I know what examiners are looking for.

HOW I CAN HELP
Do you want to improve your grade in Land law or Trusts?
I can help you understand the basics and develop a thorough understanding of key topics in property law. I will build your confidence to relieve the stress associated with tutor’s questions aimed directly at you (‘in the hot seat’) and enable you feel positive about joining discussions and asking questions in class. My sessions are always interactive, and we will focus on your needs and abilities. I can also help you with structuring answers to ‘problem’ questions and provide support for exam preparation.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT FROM ME AND HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM OUR SESSIONS
Law is not easy, and students find property law especially scary and challenging. The best way to learn and understand is not by just listening to lectures. Lectures are a great introduction to a topic, but they are not enough on their own. Small group teaching sessions (‘tutorials’ or ‘seminars’) are the most important learning experience for law students.
A good tutorial session will involve a blend of questions from the tutor and answers from students. This is partly to assess the students’ level of understanding and correct any errors, but it is also to give students practice at ‘thinking on their feet’ and articulating logical arguments in public. This can be great fun (trust me on this!) and an extremely helpful learning experience when watching and participating in the progression of questions and answers.
However, many students find discussing their answers and asking questions in seminars an intimidating experience and worry that they may look foolish in front of other students if they are put in ‘the hot seat’. This concern can be exacerbated by ‘virtual’ group seminars. Your tutorials with me will be private so you are not under pressure and you can answer without fear and embarrassment.

You set the goals and pace of the sessions.

I will ask you to take an active role during our teaching sessions (so I don’t deliver ‘lectures’), but it will be delivered at a level to suit your needs. The more you put into a session with me – the more you will get out of it! Sessions will usually involve us going through seminar questions together or answers to past exam questions. I can provide questions for you if required.

SUPPORT FOR ASSESSMENTS
I am happy to provide feedback on assignment answers before submission and answers to practice questions students have prepared. The more detailed your draft is; the more useful the feedback will be. There is a minimum charge for this (one hour). You can send me as many drafts as you like. I usually do this via email.

IMPORTANT NOTE REGARDING SUPPORT FOR ASSESSMENTS
I take an ethical approach to my role, so I do not write your assignments for you or provide answer plans as this would be academically dishonest. You may face severe penalties by your university if a 3rd party writes an assessment for you. Please check the assessment regulations of your own university carefully as ‘contract cheating’ (where a student’s submitted assessment has been written for them either wholly or partially by a 3rd party) is an especially serious form of academic misconduct. Some university assessment regulations prohibit ANY proof-reading or copy editing for a fee; others do allow it but will look at the scale of the changes. I will endeavour to ensure that my feedback does not ‘cross the line’ between supporting your learning and contract cheating. However, it is your responsibility to check to see if my services would be a breach of your university’s regulations and it is your choice as to the extent of changes you make to your work following my feedback. As a general rule, I do not provide general tuition once a `seen` assessment question has been released.

Any feedback provided is confidential and will not be disclosed to your university without your prior consent.
