Information about Jayne
As a teacher for over 40 years in a secondary school setting, I know how to provide support for a child to flourish and engage with their subjects successfully. My teaching has been rated `Outstanding` in a Pioneers inspection. From a Head of Year to becoming a senior SEN English teacher, I have been teaching full-time throughout this period in secondary schools across all ages and abilities. As a tutor for 30 years, I have worked with students in reading, writing, Literacy, English Language, and English Literature to help them to reach their goals. Although my focus in the past ten years has been on students that perhaps have some barriers to learning, I have always continued to also support students who are very high achieving and who wish to boost and polish their skills at top levels!
As a Mum to two children, I know how much our children need support throughout the difficult times in education.
My specialisms are English Literature and English Language from Years 7-11, and A-Level English Literature. Additionally, I can offer tuition to Key Stage 3 in those valuable years that lead up to examinations covering English Language, English Literature, and History.
I can provide support for primary juniors with English, preparing them for the transition into high school in this essential subject and a new phase of learning. However, I am very flexible and can tailor my resources and approach for children at the beginning of their primary journey.
As well as working with upper and middle ability range students, I have also been a specialist teacher at exam level for students who find studying very difficult, perhaps because of a SEND issue.
With a background of 16 years as a Head of Year and a deep involvement in pastoral welfare, I take a holistic approach to teaching children; listening to them and their parents, and pacing and differentiating in whatever way is necessary to enable everyone to thrive.
Learning should be a fun and enlightening experience. This is vital to my approach to teaching. Learning is not just writing but a combination of reading, writing, listening, speaking and expressing yourself. Tuition includes all elements of these, enabling students to grow in confidence and ability and thrive in and beyond their exams! If you feel I can be of help, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Are you concerned that your child has lost vital learning time due to the Coronavirus? If so, you may wish to consider tuition to help build up the skills and knowledge necessary to fill that gap and move them forward in a safe and secure manner. I am keen to help parents and children who feel this would be useful to them!
I am passionate about books and reading. When Im not teaching, I can be found reading, gardening, listening to music, and spending time with my daughter (23) and son (19) as they go along their life journeys. My family mean everything to me, as do close friendships. The world is a troubled place and we need to treat each other with respect and kindness in everything we do.
I love the creative arts, theatre, nature, and spending time with my family, cooking, and growing things. History is something I adore, and I did this as part of my undergraduate degree.
Every child matters, and for some the classroom can at times be overpowering, stifling, or simply just not personal enough. One to one tuition affords time and space for a pupil and teacher to work together towards positive outcomes. All children have the right to learn and I am eager to help wherever possible.
Testimonial: My time with with Jayne was incredibly useful in helping me with both my English literature and language GCSE. I started with her near the end of year ten, and from the very start she was helpful, providing resources, advice for my mock examinations and going over set texts with me-helping me to see things in a different light and be more perceptive in my thinking. Each lesson was well planned out and adjusted according to my weaknesses, with regular homework given to consolidate this, however Jayne was also really flexible and willing to change plans if anything of short notice came up. I am thankful for her help and have no doubt that if I was sitting my exams the hard work would have payed off! - Ms T Rao, Grade 9, 2019
Thank you for your help and making her achieve the best grades! - Mrs A Rao, 2019
What a wonderful lady Jayne is. My daughter has been tutored in English Literature and Language by Jayne for 9 months now in preparation for her GCSE in 2021. After missing a lot of school, changing school in year 10, Jayne has been absolutely wonderful. Jayne is getting the best out of Ellie and her method of teaching is first class, she is extremely patient, explains and breaks down the text so that Ellie can understand. Ellie has moved up a set in school for English in February 2020, I feel this is because of extra tuition she has received. She communicates with me weekly, giving updates and sends encouraging emails that gives Ellie a boost, she praises when she has done well and is firm when not so well.
I can 100% recommend Jayne. - Mrs L ODea, 2021
I write this to thank you for all your efforts to improve Minuka`s iGCSE exam performance on English language and literature. As you know Minuka was not performing well in his English subjects, and your continuous guidance during the last few months helped him immensely to improve his confidence and performance. He says he learnt a lot from you about how to understand and breakdown the questions and structure the answers well. I have no hesitation what so ever to recommend you to anyone, and in fact, I will introduce you to anyone that I know, who would need the help of an English tutor, so that they all can benefit from your expertise. Many thanks once again for all your help with Minuka`s English tutoring. - Dr K Keraminiyage, 2021
Thank you for everything - Miss H Munir, 2020
"Jayne is both passionate and professional. She is not only an excellent teacher, but also a great listener. Her lessons are both engaging and enjoyable. Beware, her passion for English is contagious. I strongly recommend Jayne to anyone looking for an amazing teacher to help with their English." - Mrs C. Lee, 2024

Experience: Throughout my career, I have always aspired to be responsible, diligent, hard-working, and thoughtful. I have built a reputation as someone who students and staff can turn to when they have difficulties. This empathy and warmth are something that I truly pride myself on. During nearly 40 years of teaching, I have participated in every aspect of school life, from being Chair of the PTA to running and producing school plays.
In this time I have been:
- Teacher of English Literature and English Language from ages 11-18 encompassing KS3, KS4, GCSEs and A-Level English Literature
- Head of Year: Managing one full-time deputy, 14 form tutors and their forms as they progressively moved through the school from Year 8-11. This involved transition from the end of Year 7 to Year 8, preparation for Upper-School and GCSEs, liaising with the director of Sixth Form as they progressed into further education.
- Senior SEN teacher. trained in SEND at school, and have since held workshops on differentiating work
- Assistant Inclusion Director: I moved into teaching all years English with SEN, acting in support of the SENCO and training other staff in teaching SEND children, delivering the curriculum in an inclusive and supportive way for students who may need extra help.
- The only Nurture form teacher for 5 years, guiding students with SEND and complex needs through their academic careers, some of them into a transition into a special school and some into colleges and placements elsewhere, building and strengthening confidence and writing references on their behalf.
Not only this but I have done additional work including:
- Developed the school counselling service and qualified in Level One training in bereavement counselling.
- Trained and supported young teachers, working with NQTs and trainees to develop their subject-specific and pastoral skills acting as a mentor, coach, lesson observer, and at times liaising with college tutors, running lunchtime sessions for them and always aiming to promote growing confidence in young teachers and practice.
- Worked alongside recently-appointed literacy coordinator giving advice when she has been creating resources for literacy delivery for the whole school.
- Delivered GCSE English alongside Entry-Level English (ran by the WJEC) for the weakest children. I ran this for several years before my school stopped using the programme. It was so successful that I received praise from the exam board for the delivery and organisation of my students speaking and delivery tapes. Around the same time, I delivered morning slots of training for teachers from local schools who were interested in presenting lessons in the same manner. One school was so impressed that a group of teachers was given funding to establish a SEND-specific classroom like mine in their school.
- In an inspection during the same year, my lessons were observed by the pastoral head of school and the then headteacher of large Special School, our sister school for SEND children. I was graded "Outstanding" for my resources, delivery, relationships, engagement, and high expectations.

I would highly recommend Jayne. She worked wonderfully with our autistic son, adapting her approach to suit his learning and communication needs. Jayne took the time to understand how he learns best, and as a result, she was able to build both trust and a strong rapport with him. Her caring, patient, and encouraging approach created a supportive learning environment where he felt understood and motivated. Under her guidance, we saw meaningful progressnot only in his academic skills, but also in his self-confidence. Jayne inspired him to want to succeed, and for that, we are incredibly grateful.

Jayne has provided continuous support and guidance to my son throughout his final GCSE year. My son is dyslexic and has really struggled with the pressure of GCSEs/exams. Jayne has been incredibly patient and supportive both academically and emotionally, always encouraging my son but without applying pressure. She is incredibly gentle, kind and thoughtful, and goes beyond her face to face tutor time to provide supporting materials, videos, hints and tips. She also makes the lesson fun and really interactive, even when my son doesn`t quite greet Jayne with the same enthusiasm as she always brings to the lesson. I would not hesitate to recommend Jayne, if more teachers were like Jayne I`m sure kids would be far more inspired to study.
