Information about Catherine

I live in Shoreditch and happy to travel for tutoring across East London.

I`m 24 and a recent Law graduate from Oxford with an MA from King`s College London in Medical Ethics and Medical Law. This coming academic year I will be completing my bar exams in preparing for a pupillage commencing in October 2018 at Outer Temple Chambers.

In terms of professional experience I have interned for the WHO`s Global Health Ethics Unit, done research with the Oxford Uehiro Centre for Practical Ethics and worked for the UN as a legal consultant in Amman for six months.

I have tutoring experience in English, French, Irish, and more general work to keep up with lessons in a variety of subjects in a mentoring capacity. I have also worked on CVs, application letters and interview techniques with students applying to university or to jobs. I was a Debate Mate mentor with a primary school in South London and a workshop leader with the Schools` Consent Project.

I really enjoy tutoring and developing a relationship with my students, and am always driven by the feeling of a success when a student begins to make progress and feel more confident in their subject. I see tutoring as a great opportunity for students to reach their potential in a subject and to make rapid progress in their studies in an exciting rather than pressured way.

I have strong anaylsis, argumentation, strategy and writing skills. At Oxford I was a successful competitive debater, becoming the English Champion and representing England at the International Mace in my first year, and accumulated a significant amount of experience teaching the skill to primary, secondary and University students. This has helped me in my role as tutor to engage enthusiastically with students and to communicate information in a way that contributes to understanding and retention without resorting to rote-learning. I`m very enthusiastic and happy to tailor lessons to each individual student`s needs and interests.

Availability: I have a flexible study schedule of my own so can almost always find a time that works with students.

Experience: English - Current

I tutor an adult learner in advanced English conversational skills.

I work with a student who attends boarding school when she is home during school breaks. We are working to consistently improve her performance in English Language and Literature, with a focus on comprehension and composition. We have intense sessions where we cover significant ground on exam strategy and approaches to thinking critically and writing well. She has shown much improvement at school since I began working with her in the holidays, and is altogether more confident in English.

I have 4 other students in English with whom I work on a similar basis as they all attend boarding schools and so I see them over the holidays. These students are at varying levels so I am experienced in pushing for the top grades at competitive schools but also in helping some students to catch up to the standard of their class. When working with students who are struggling, my main focus is to build confidence in their ability to excel in reading and writing by providing a number of strategies and techniques which give students a way of approaching the subject. I find that those who find English daunting dislike the `vague` nature that the subject can sometimes take on at school, as compared with the rigour and structure of the sciences. Often these students gain significantly from my ability to help them conceptualise their workings in the subject in a new light.

English - Past

Over December 2015 and January 2016 I helped a student prepare for 11+ entrance exams for various London day schools. We focused on exam technique and how best to `impress the examiner` and pick up marks, as her enthusiasm and imagination sometimes led her not to fulfil her potential within the structure of the 11+.

I tutored a student preparing to take his Junior Certificate (GSCE equivalent) English Exam in June 2015. We worked on improving the quality of his work, in particular through better planning of answers. We also focused on grammar and spelling as these areas were relatively weak. We prepared Romeo and Juliet, Of Mice and Men and a variety of poems in addition to practicing answers on unseen texts. I made comprehensive notes on each of the texts for him to use as a study aid. I also corrected practice exams papers and together we went through my comments in detail to find areas for improvement. In particular, I worked to improve the students ability to apply himself to his work - he was very bright but failed to see the value of school work. Gradually, I helped him to learn the value of hard work and how good skills in English such as analysis and argumentation would be helpful to him for years to come.

I also tutored a student in her second year of secondary school. Our main focus was improving her English language skills and ensuring that she stayed on top of lessons at school. I integrated expanding her vocabulary with work on her studied texts (Romeo and Juliet and To Kill a Mockingbird). Her confidence grew enormously over the course of the year and she began to make great progress in her studies and to enjoy her school life a lot more.

French - Current

I teach a 7 year old introductory French with a focus on engaging and exciting lessons to provoke her interest in learning the language while providing a solid foundation for strong future academic work in the subject.

During school holidays I tutor 3 students intensively in GCSE french with a focus on oral work and exam strategy in language exams.

French - Past

I tutored a pupil in his last year of secondary school for his Oral and Written French exam (A-level). Oral preparation each week consisted of running through a practice oral exam, followed by my suggestions for how to expand and improve answers. These suggestions were typed up and sent to the student for revision over the week. Preparation for the written exam focused on helping the student to plan answers. The student quickly picked up techniques to help to weave his vocabulary into the planning process and to go from one idea succinctly to the next.

Study/Time Management/Help With Homework

I spent a year tutoring a dyslexic Year 7 student daily after school. I helped with homework and supplemented his learning from the school day. Often, this meant approaching concepts from different angles than those in the textbook and using more interactive modes of teaching. Towards the exam period we focused on revision techniques and exam strategy with great success.

Irish

I tutored a student preparing to take his Junior Certificate (GCSE equivalent) Irish Oral and Written Exam in June 2015.

Other Teaching Experience

I have international experience as a debating coach on topics ranging from basic skills in argumentation and strategy to content-related workshops on moral and political philosophy and current affairs. Much of this teaching comprised in helping students develop good habits and intuitions in argumentation, an important skill for any essay-based subject. I recently held the position of Debate Coach at Wesley College, Dublin during which time I was responsible for Junior and Senior weekly House Meeting and worked through a variety of motions and techniques wight he students. I prepped students for public speaking and debating competitions and was responsible for their welfare and performance at those competitions.
