Information about Janet
A Cambridge graduate specialising in English support KS1-4 (particularly GCSE), especially students with an additional need / lack of motivation / lack of confidence / anxiety.
I have been a keen reader all my life, and it never ceases to amaze me how powerful our language is, and that the more we know how to use it well, the better and more enjoyably we can express ourselves, in all walks of life - and that we can keep increasing our knowledge every day of our lives. I have a high level of commitment to the students I work with and never stop seeking to get the best from them; I regularly send extra relevant material by e-mail or post (often choosing to write letters in order to show a student how good letter-writing is done, as this is an under-practised task that can easily come up at GCSE, and needs good demonstration). I believe I am very approachable and personable and convey my enthusiasm for the English language - using humour where appropriate to make the lessons as enjoyable as possible, and making high-quality resources that I continually adapt for each student (in conjunction with strong knowledge of exam technique).
Availability: Day-time, some evenings and weekends.
Willing to travel: 12 miles
Experience: I have worked as an English Language specialist in Learning Support for 12 years, helping students with a wide range of need (and ability) to succeed at GCSE English; I currently tutor students privately. I particularly enjoy working with students who are struggling with motivation and need a cheerful, encouraging teacher to come up with all sorts of ideas to keep them on track, focussed and delivering the best work they can. Although my experience has largely been in Language, I have built up strong knowledge of Literature (currently An Inspector Calls, Jekyll and Hyde, Lord of the Flies, Macbeth and the AQA Power and Conflict Poetry Anthology). From a recent parent: `Her knowledge of her subject is beyond reproach and I cannot commend her enough for her dedication in instilling in my daughter an approach to the subject that led to her success. As a result I recommend her as an English tutor for GCSE English Language and Literature.`

Janet has been immensely helpful in getting my daughter back on track with her studies and exam technique.

Janet has a very personal approach with clear understanding of teaching rather than just subject knowledge which we value as parents. Her communication skills are first class and both timely and on topic. However, what we were really impressed with was that Janet is straightforward, has the skills to understand the tutoring requirements of the child and is able to back those up with her years of teaching experience and demonstrates what she is going to do in future lessons, which is something you do not often find with pure subject experts who are not actually teachers. I think that makes a real difference. My child is happy tutoring with Janet and we are happy as parents.
