It has been my privilege to spend forty years teaching a wide range of students in different contexts: from tutoring international students at a London tutorial college, to preparing young people in Further Education and mature students in Adult Education for GCSE and A level examinations. I have taught at the University of Plymouth for twenty years(my specialisms are Renaissance literature and Romanticism) and now that I have retired, have continued my love of teaching through one-to-one tuition. I particularly enjoy the opportunity to focus on individual students, developing confidence, and expanding capacities for understanding and expression.

It is helpful if new students come to the first tutorial with a piece of writing so that I can gain an impressions of their strengths and we can work out a plan for the areas that need improving. I ask students to write an essay, or answer an exam question each week and if possible to send it to me in advance, so that I can write a detailed commentary which we will discuss in the following tutorial.
