Information about Marika

Hi I`m Marika, and I`m a Maths tutor based in Bristol. I have a first class honours in Mathematics and Psychology from Royal Holloway, University of London. I have also achieved all As at A level and all A-A* at GCSE.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have 4 years of experience providing one-to-one Maths support to students. For three years, I was employed as a Maths and Statistics Academic Learning Adviser in the University of Roehampton in London. Here I supported students across all departments with any maths they needed for their university modules, supporting on average 20 students a week, throughout the academic year.

I have experience in tailoring my tuition to each student`s individual needs, as well as across many levels of mathematics, from learning about fractions and percentages, to calculus. I have also supported many students in passing their Maths QTS (Qualified Teacher Status) tests.

My aim as a tutor is to build students` confidence, foster a real understanding of the subject and, eventually, even enjoyment. I believe that through this approach the student will not only increase their exam scores, but they will really be able to gain the most from their maths education - logical thinking skills, and confidence in challenging and perplexing situations, as well as increased overall self-esteem.

Additionally, I am very interested in the psychology of leaning and memory, as well as pedagogy. I have studied learning and memory as part of the Psychology part of my BSc, as well as through my own research, and I am always keen to share the useful insights I have gained with students. I also hold HEA (Higher Education Academy) fellowship, which is an `international recognition of a commitment to professionalism in teaching and learning.

My approach is friendly and un-intimidating - I recognise that the fear of maths is in the way of success for very many people, and that it is crucial that students feel relaxed and comfortable around their tutor. Students who do not fear being judged for making mistakes and asking for help are able to learn much more quickly.

I am happy to support child and adult learners. Currently I am particularly interested in supporting those working towards their GCSEs, however I am also open to providing support at lower and higher levels, as well as offering support to university students with maths elements of their studies (for example in biology or business), or with statistics used to scientific hypothesis testing (for example in Psychology and other sciences).

If you think I could help, do get in touch to arrange an initial lesson or to ask any questions you may have.
