Information about Jonathan

**Now taking on new students for 2020/2021**

I have a first-class degree in Physics and I`m a qualified science teacher who spent two years teaching science GCSE and Physics A-Level at a school in South London. I was rated as an `outstanding` teacher and helped many students drastically improve on their predicted grades and gain acceptance to top universities. As a tutor I have been fortunate enough to work with a number of students over the years who have all gone on to their first choice of sixth form school, university or into competitive apprenticeships with degree study schemes.

To ensure my students succeed, I utilise the latest teaching pedagogy and tailor tuition to `connect` with the way an individual student forms an understanding. In addition, I believe highlighting the interesting bits and real world applications of a subject, whilst using a bit of humour where appropriate, cultivates intrinsic motivation which ultimately results in academic success. My approach means that I have helped students at all levels improve their grades and realise their ambitions.

Outside of teaching I am a keen musician and have played in many different bands over the years, and I have a lot of fun messing around creating music in my home studio. I also like to keep active and spend a lot of my time playing various sports.

Experience: As a qualified teacher I have been rated `Outstanding`. I had the opportunity to work with students all day every day, and am constantly searching for the most effective teaching methods to support my students’ learning. In addition, I keep up-to-date with the various exam specifications to ensure that what I am teaching is relevant and supports exam success, whilst not omitting any interest building anecdotes which help build the passion around a subject. I have extensive experience with students who have special educational needs and have built a toolkit of strategies to help all my students realise their full potential. In addition, I have taught top set students in the classroom and through tuition, both of which have gone on to achieve great results and sometimes to study physics at a higher level when at first they didn`t intend on it.

I base my teaching practice on an evidence informed learning theory approach, bringing together the latest cognitive science and my experience of what works best with my students. In my mind, great academics and the higher-level thinking expected of expectational students stem from having a solid foundation in two main areas: knowledge and skill. It is proven that having a solid base of knowledge, stored in your mind in a logical structure, enables you to internalise new information at a faster rate by linking it to what you already know. In other words, as you develop you bank of knowledge you are able to learn new things more easily. This is a welcome idea as it means that wherever you are now is the hardest possible place to be - it can only get easier! Cognitive science suggests that retrieval practice, by a considerable margin, is the most effective method of developing a solid bank of knowledge. As your tutor, I will create activities to support this process and help you develop study skills so that you are able to employ retrieval practice on your own; and not just for the subject that I am tutoring you in. The second main area to focus on is the skills you need to perform the various functions required for exam success. Cognitive science suggests that deliberate practice, which is made up of five key themes, is the most effective method of developing skills. I am a firm believer that with the new and extremely demanding specifications for all subjects, it is time to start helping students work ‘smarter’ not ‘harder’. Deliberate practice supports this idea by ensuring you are making your time as impactful as possible. There is a third focus area that I will help students develop - exam technique. Knowledge and skill should be the main focus of developing real understanding and academic resilience but in the run up to exams it is important to ensure that students are able to provide the examiner with what they are looking for. I will provide you with constant tuition of how to interpret exam questions and answer exam questions, ensuring that the students focus is always with the end goal in sight.

Jonathan is a fantastic intelligent tutor, kind thoughtful and very organsied. He set up a good plan of work and understood the student needs and areas of concern which are now being addressed. He has often stayed on extra (with no additional charge) to finish an area of work being reviewed or to solve a particular issue. I highly recommend Jonathan as an A level Physics tutor - outstanding
