Information about Sophie
Hi! My name is Sophie, and I am a current third-year student at the University of Oxford where I study French and Portuguese. At the moment, I am on my year abroad working as an English Teacher in Paris.
I am a friendly and enthusiastic person, who would love to help you to achieve your own goals, whatever they may be! I hope students can feel relaxed with me and able to ask anything at all, outside of the often-stressful classroom environment. I want to make students feel completely comfortable with making mistakes, as I fully believe that this is the way that we progress.
I look forward to meeting you and working together!
Availability: Monday - Friday: 10am - 8pm
Saturday & Sunday: 10am - 4pm
This is my usual availability, however, as I am on my year abroad at the moment I have a more flexible schedule and can work with you. Please do reach out if you have any questions regarding availability!
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: Studying both French and Portuguese means I can cater to any language needs, including help with vocabulary and grammar. I have also just spent 7 months working in Paris as an English teacher, which means I am extremely comfortable helping you with your conversational French.
My degree is mainly literature-based, so I can assist with questions about set texts and help with essay structure or finding sophisticated points of analysis for your writing. I am passionate about sharing my love for both languages and literature, whilst hopefully making it fun too!
I am very well-equipped to tutor a variety of students of all ages and abilities having already experienced professionally tutoring young people, both in-person and online, in Maths and English during my gap year. Alongside my teaching experience in a secondary school in Paris, I feel very confident in adapting to whatever your best way of learning is.
Regarding Oxbridge preparation and Personal Statements, applying can be a really daunting experience. I have mentored several A-Level students in applying to Oxford to study languages through email and video chat sessions. This included providing feedback on personal statements and written work as well as conducting preparatory mock interviews. While no tutor can ensure a place at Oxbridge, I want to make students feel much more confident in themselves and be able to convey their passion and ability more clearly in the application process.

I have had four lessons now with Sophie. She is very patient and enthusiastic. Her vocabulary is excellent and I am making good progress in my classes.
