Information about Kelly

My name is Kelly, and I am a long-standing graduate and educator in Law. I am also a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and have published with the Association of Colleges. In June 2019, I obtained an MA in Education. I have also worked as an Academic Practice Advisor and Educational Consultant whereby I assisted lecturers with making learning more active and inclusive. I helped new lecturers to develop their teaching style to best suit the needs of their students.

I began studying Law since I was 14 therefore I have the experience and knowledge of how the subject is taught across various levels. I have also written a Dissertation on Domestic Violence concerning Battered Women as part of my degree, therefore, giving me extra knowledge of the defences to murder which is a popular topic at A-Level/Degree Level.

Additionally, due to writing a lengthy dissertation, I am aware of the organisation and time management that is required in producing a successful paper. I am happy to provide tutoring with regards to this too.

I have experience working at various institutions in a classroom environment.

In addition to this, I am aware of different methods of learning and I`m happy to assist in Academic Skill Coaching. This is useful for coursework/ dissertations and exam preparation.

I have completed my PGCE in the Post Compulsory Education and Training Sector at Level 7 and have experience teaching students aged 8-60 years of age.

I have also developed a new role in Academic Skill development at HE. Being a Law teacher and a skills coach allows me to facilitate individual academic development.

I now run my own Academic Consultancy, Tutoring and Coaching Business. I specialise in the Montessori style for primary students and an engaging approach for my University tutees (both undergraduate and post-graduate).

Experience: My experience working in Higher Education commenced following the completion of my Law degree. I developed a passion for teaching through various volunteering schemes in schools and placements at both college and university level. Tutoring privately provided a platform for me to share my enthusiasm for learning and academic and professional development. In 2015, I completed my PGDE at Nottingham Trent university whilst delivering on a Level 6, Security and Offender Management degree and A-Level Law at Derby College. My motivation behind working in my current role in Higher Education Academic Skill Support was ignited through observing a gap in students’ study skills confidence whilst training to be a teacher. My dual role in HE Academic Skills and Lecturer of Law/Skills has allowed me to develop an in-depth understanding of various academic matters. Academic literacy and integrity, critical thinking, reflective practice, research, plagiarism and referencing (OSCOLA, APA and Harvard) (amongst others) are the areas which I specialise in. My experience has provided me with the opportunity to share and develop understanding and knowledge of academic matters with my students and colleagues from level 4-7.
My ethos behind teaching and learning places the students at the heart of all planning, delivery and assessment whilst simultaneously kindling creativity. Student-centred learning focuses on departing from the transmission model and engages the student in taking responsibility for their learning. Facilitating learning in a safe environment, encouraging engagement and interactivity are my points of focus. I believe in transforming the lives of students promoting equality of opportunity, providing a rounded experience through supporting the students towards their development.
My day-to-day role involves managing various academic projects which exposes me to all HE curriculum areas. Workin for myself involves a high degree of flexibility and challenges me to create solutions to academic matters, devising and adapting resources to fit with individual courses and student. To do this successfully, I have designed an audit to capture individual student self-assessment of their skillset. This involves questions relating to their academic skills, communication skills, presentation skills etc. The positive impact of this is to use this document to assess and monitor progress for each student, throughout different intervals in the year efficiently and effectively.
I have aided students in their interview skills and LPC interview preparations. Further to this, I have also played a role in helping individuals with CV and applications for work experience/training contracts and placements.
