Martyn

I graduated with a degree in English Literature and Language from the University of Buckingham in July 2013. Since July I have been regularly teaching online and am currently studying for a Masters degree in English Literature by Research on Joseph Conrad.

My passion for English came much later in life. I have worked many jobs in different environments and acquired a lot of life skills in this time. Since coming to realise the value of education I find I enjoy teaching more than anything else I have done.

I always endeavour to make my tuition engaging, relatable and inspiring. I cater to the needs of the individual and work with the student to set goals to achieve together. I will happily go the extra mile for anyone who wishes to genuinely improve their English, even if they struggle with the subject.

I firmly believe that English as a language is a fundamental skill that empowers those who can use it effectively. One of the first uses of language was to tell stories. Great literature is ‘telling stories’ in order to explore the human condition in an emotionally profound way. This is why I personally find both aspects of English are a joy to teach, because we learn about ourselves and each other.

Availability: I am available during weekdays, especially after school, and most weekends.

Experience: I am able to confidently teach Primary School, GCSE and A-Level English Literature and Language, as well as English as a Second Language. I have a Enhanced DBS Certificate allowing me to work with children and vulnerable people. I am happy to help anyone at University level who is struggling with their English, or if they wish tuition on specific authors, especially Joseph Conrad, George Orwell, William Blake and J.G Ballard. I enjoy tutoring young people but I am comfortable with teaching learners of all ages. I know the challenges of a mature student and so I can tackle their needs.
