Information about Humaira
I am an experienced lecturer in English Literature; my expertise lie in modern and contemporary literature, postcolonial literature and theory, and queer literature and theory. I have many years` experience of tutoring across different levels - from GCSE to postgraduate - and tailor sessions through discussion with each student regarding what they want to achieve.
Central to my teaching practice is supporting students to achieve their full potential, through developing confidence in independent and critical thinking, understanding difficult concepts, close textual analysis, and academic writing skills. Sessions can be discussion based, structured around a particular text, or focused on essay feedback, among other things. My wide-ranging and supportive approach led to me achieving an Outstanding Teaching Award, voted for by students.
I am an active researcher, with my most recent article published summer 2019, meaning that I can relay up-to-date knowledge to my students where necessary.

Experience:
I have taught across a range of modules, from introductory survey modules such as Reading Literature (University of Manchester), Approaches to Narrative (Manchester Metropolitan University) and Foundations of Literary Study (Nottingham Trent University), to specialist modules Reading Gender and Sexuality (NTU), Writing, Identity and Nation (UoM), Postcolonial Texts (NTU), and Gender, Sexuality and Culture (UoM) and Home and Exile (MMU).
I have been lecturing and teaching at university level since 2007, and also have significant experience of tutoring GCSE and A-Level students where I have a consistent track record in supporting students to improve their grades in the period between mock and final exams.
Specific strengths here lie in developing students` ability to justify, explore and argue for their responses to texts, and offering feedback on written work that supports them to articulate their ideas more clearly and persuasively.
The efficacy of my teaching has led to most of my dissertation students achieving a 2:1 or higher, and GCSE and A Level students achieving B grades or higher.
Student feedback has also commented on my teaching style as making them enthusiastic to learn, and helping them understand challenging concepts and texts.
