Information about Jayne

I love Biology. The study of living organisms and systems has fascinated me ever since I first saw a diagram of the structure of the human heart. Parts of the A Level Biology syllabus can be challenging, learning the right terminology for exam questions, interpreting questions and applying new knowledge to unfamiliar scenarios takes practise. Explaining complex biological concepts clearly and helping students to interpret and answer questions is something I take pride in and thoroughly enjoy.

I am a qualified teacher and have an honours degree in Biology from the University of Bath. I have a wealth of A Level Biology teaching experience in sixth form colleges and as a private tutor.

I have carried out microbiological research at the University of Auckland and written biology resources for the world renowned educational publisher `Pearson,` as well as writing biology web pages for Goldhill Education.

My approach to tutorials:

I love helping students to understand concepts that they have previously struggled with.
Together we will identify areas a student would like to go through, using the specification and teacher`s guides to make sure they have covered everything that could be in the exam. We will make sure they understand the detail of the topic and can explain it themselves clearly in writing . Then we will focus in on the exam questions on that topic to get to grips with exam technique. After the session it is important that the student looks at those questions and similar ones again, practise makes perfect, it also increases long term memory! Using mark schemes is key to really appreciate and see the pattern in how to approach any exam questions.

I ONLY OFFER ONLINE TUITION and hence I have a wacom drawing board which I use to annotate and write notes on. I often use this in conjunction with Google Jamboard on which I can add exam questions and other documents. I share the Jamboard with my student (prior to the tutorial) so they have access to it at any time during and after the tutorial. We can both view and make changes to this in real time during the tutorial (seeing what each other is doing live). It has proved very successful with my students. I use Microsoft Teams as my collaboration software.
