Information about Mary
I am passionate about the study of English, both the use of language and different genres of literature. I have over twenty years experience of teaching in both state and independent schools and colleges. I have been in charge of University applications in a large independent grammar school. I have always achieved excellent results. My A level results were always in the top 25% in the country and frequently in the top 10%.
I have worked as an examiner for A level English Language and am currently an examiner for A2 Literature.I have also marked English papers for entrance exams to grammar schools. I believe that students now need to be very clear about assessment objectives and how to address them. My up to date experience as an examiner enables me to prepare students to meet the rigours of the exams and the demands of coursework. I always mark students` work in a very detailed way with lots of advice on how to improve. The work is always returned the next time I see the student.
I have always had very positive feedback from my students. My enthusiasm for the subjects helps the students to enjoy their work. I am able to foster and improve the confidence of the tutees I teach. I tailor lessons to the need of the individual. My enthusiastic approach coupled with a sense of humour means that students enjoy my lessons.

Experience: I have over 20 years` experience of teaching to public exam level in English Literature and English Language to A level. I have examined English Language at A level.I am a current A level Literature examiner I have taught GCSE English and English Literature.
I have taught pupils aged 11-18 and have marked entrance exams for grammar schools.
I have taught in sixth form colleges and grammar schools. Many students of mine have gone on to achieve successful Oxbridge entrance.
I have been in charge of university entrance applications in both a grammar school and an FE college. I was Head of Upper Sixth Form at a leading independent grammar school. I will always tailor lessons to the individual student’s needs I am able to give students individual help in writing personal statements for their applications.

Mary has been tutoring our son during his year 10 and 11 GCSE studies. Mary has always been very diligent in her communications with us, she has delivered superb lessons without exception and our son has regularly said how much he enjoys the lessons with Mary. There is no doubt that our son has benefited from Mary’s tutorage. Over these last two years of switching from in person to online and back to in person lessons Mary has always been professional and personable in her communications with us. As our son comes to the end of year 11 and begins to think about his A level choices, he is seriously considering English as an option, without doubt this line of thought has been impacted by Mary’s enthusiasm for her subject. I would have no hesitation whatsoever in highly recommending Mary as an exceptional tutor.

My daughter has been tutored by Mary for a few months now in GCSE English Language and Literature. Her progress is evident; she has gained confidence in the subject and this has been reflected in her recent mock GCSE results. With Mary’s continued support, my daughter is now in a much better position to be able to secure good grades in the upcoming summer exams. Update September 2020: my daughter was awarded grade 8s in both language and literature, whereas she had been tracking at 6s before she started seeing Mary. This was great progress in just a few months and we wholeheartedly recommend Mary as an English tutor.

My stepson has been seeing Mary for the past 4 months in preparation for his GCSE English exams. With her guidance and support, he has gained confidence and understanding in the skills and techniques needed to achieve good marks in both Literature and Language. My Son has had A level English tuition with Mary since November 2018 leading up to his final exams in May 2019. From the first lesson his work began to show improvement and his marks have increased by 1 to 2 grades. The feedback from college has been extremely positive and they see a marked improvement in his approach to the exam questions. He enjoys his time with Mary and feels completely at ease. I recommend Mary highly - she has given Sam a new confidence in his ability and enabled him to reach his potential.
