Information about Javier
Dear learner:
My name is Javier, I am a Spanish classicist (BA in classics by the University of Granada), and also qualified teacher of Classics and Spanish. I am currently based in Mitcham. At the moment, I am a secondary and primary school teacher of Spanish, and I am looking for students who want to improve their knowledge in any of these three languages: Spanish, Latin and Ancient Greek. Whether you are an adult looking forward to learn a new language, or you want to improve your son´s/daughter´s result at GCSE / A-levels qualifications, I am here to help you achieve this! I have good experience teaching students all ages, from year threes in primary school to retired people willing improve their command of Spanish.
I am an open minded and flexible person, as well as emphatic and patient. I really enjoy teaching, and I think these personal qualities help me to bring the best out of my students.
In terms of my teaching qualifications, I have carried out my PGCE back in Spain, and I hold QTS here in UK. I am also trained as a Teacher of Spanish as a Second Language through a language school in Granada (DeLengua). On top of this, I have done several courses on MFL teaching methodologies such as TPR and TPRS, which I use when in class. Thanks to this knowledge, I am able to deliver lessons in the target language and guide you from day one to learn Spanish mainly through immersing in the language.
As for Latin and Greek, I believe my sounded subject knowledge to be a key factor in delivering good lessons. During the five years that my BA takes, I read two authors both for Latin and Greek each years. Moreover, I had to take linguistic-related subjects such as Metrics, Morphology and Syntax. All this I can bring to my lessons to give you a full understanding of what can very often be demanding and challenging texts. I have tutored before Ancient Greek at A-levels in Spain, having helped my students to achieve excellent results and progress on the subject.
Availability: I am during the evenings, and on Saturday mornings until the end of the course.
Willing to travel: 3 miles
Experience: I have a wide variety of experience, both in schools and for independent learners with different goals.
I am at the moment working as a teacher of Spanish in a secondary school. I am the teacher in charge of Spanish up to Y11, so I am very well aware of the national curriculum for KS2 and KS3 and GCSE. I have trained students both for AQA and Edexcel boards, so I am aware of the exam formats as well.
I also teach one day in primary, from years 3 to 6, so I am able to help your son/daughter even from an early stage.
I have also tutored before students for A-Levels of Spanish, helping all of them to progress in the subject and improve their results.
Finally, I have worked as well with adults who want to learn Spanish with different goals: from young professionals to retired people planning to move to Spain. I have taught in a Language School back in Granada, and also here in London. Whether you are looking for individual tuition, or you would like to have lessons in a group with somebody else, I can help you. Do not hesitate to contact me!!
