Information about Andrew
I am 59 years old and I recently took early retirement from the IT Industry. I studied Maths at University to MSc level and first worked as a mathematician in industry before switching to IT. I have always enjoyed tutoring and teaching in my job and I plan to carry on with that into semi-retirement.
I live in Bedford, UK. My hobbies include Music and Hifi, Fitness and Narrowboating.
I believe there are certain basic skills that are essential to progress with mathematics. My approach is to address the basic skills and then follow up with practice and more practice. I have found in all my teaching experience that progress is enhanced if the tutee has fun. Self motivation is the most efficient way of progressing and enjoyment of the activity enhances motivation.
I am approachable and patient and try to spend time assessing the tutees individual needs and designing tasks and exercises to address those needs.
It is important to keep records of goals and achievements - I keep individual progress information in the form of agreed specific goals - not too formal but I think it really helps to see progress from the Tutee`s point of view.
"Andy is a great tutor, he explains things clearly and starts from the basics. He is friendly, enthusiastic and I would highly recommend him." - LS
"Andy was able to make maths relevant and easy to understand - something I struggled with in a classroom situation. Before tutoring with Andy, I was worried I wouldn’t get a pass at GCSE, but thanks to his patience and knowledge of the varied curriculum, I exceeded my grade expectations!" SC
"Andy tutored my A-level maths, at the time when I was struggling with many concepts and scoring poorly in practice exams. Through our weekly sessions I was able to both revise subjects that I had been taught in class and get a head start in areas that I not covered yet. His excellent ability to communicate and great patience helped me improve my mathematical ability greatly. In the end our efforts were fruitful and I was able to secure a grade A in A-Level maths, a huge improvement from the D’s I had been scoring in practice exams at the beginning of the year. I would whole heartedly recommend Andy for anyone who is struggling with maths and feels as though they need an extra boost." MK
Availability: I am available during the day, some evenings and some weekends.
During the virus lockdown I have found that online tutoring really works well. I am fully equipped to carry out online tutoring, all you need is a computer with a browser with sound and a mic if possible - but if not I use Zoom and you can dial into that easily.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: During my postgraduate studies I supervised undergraduates and also delivered a number of seminars to 1st and 2nd year students. In my career I have had a number of assignments delivering training courses both managerial and technical. I am a qualified squash coach and have coached junior and adult squash. More recently I have been helping with revision sessions at a local upper school.
I have been tutoring for 3 years now and have had around 30 Tutees during that period (80% being GCSE and 20% A-Level). This has improved my familiarity with the various exam boards and question styles. Online tutoring is becoming very popular and I can assure you it is effective.

Feedback For Andrew (1)
Andrew has been tutoring for us for a number of years. He is a reliable and timely. He is an excellent tutor and aided in the achievement of GCSE maths for both of our children. He is also an exceptionally nice gentleman. We will miss him as both of our children, whom he tutored, have left school. Excellent tutor. Thoroughly recommend.
