Information about Tomos
Hello, my name is Tomos Prys-Jones and I have recently completed an M.Phil in Developmental Neuroscience at the University of Cambridge. As well as neuroscience I have an interest, and in-depth knowledge, in many areas of science due to an undergraduate degree in the Natural Sciences. I am very keen to teach all scientific subjects: biology and chemistry to A-level, and maths and physics to GCSE.
Science has given me many fascinating opportunities and have instilled in me many qualities valuable to tutoring. My enthusiasm for science has grown from conducting my own research, in particular establishing an on-going research project in the Peruvian Amazon rain-forest, to critically assess the practices of a sustainable forestry company (Green Gold Forestry). Also, as a committee member in St John`s College (Cambridge) natural sciences society, I took on the responsibility of organizing scientific talks within the college, and met some remarkable researchers. My aim as a tutor is to transfer my knowledge and fascination for science, in the context of a particular course, so that the student may succeeded in their exams.
Outside of science I have many recreational interests. I am a keen sportsman and my involvement with the University rugby and swimming teams is testament to my personal drive and time management. As well as sport I am a keen artist and musician. Currently I am a member of a Jazz-Funk band, playing percussion and guitar, with gigs lined up throughout 2015.
Availability: If you are based in North Wales I am available to tutor in person. However due to my rural home location I am also very happy to tutor online, using skype and an online whiteboard.
I am available most days, so please feel free to get in contact to discuss a tutoring time that suits you.
Willing to travel: 30 miles
Experience: Previously I have tutored students in A-level chemistry and biology around my home in North Wales, resulting in substantial improvements in their grades. I found their success motivating. As well as tutoring, I presented my work throughout my masters to post graduate students and professors at laboratory meetings, and led the subsequent discussions. The key to success in both cases was extensive preparation and effective communication. I am easily able to tailor lessons according to my audience`s ability.
I am also a volunteer with the charitable organisation, Forest School Camps, caring for children and young adults with disability and encouraging an outdoors education.
