My son is starting Year 4, and we are looking for a tutor to help him with Maths, English and Science.

He is a good listener and follows instructions well. Maths is his strongest subject, but he still needs to become more confident and secure in all the topics expected at his age.

For Maths, we would like the tutor to cover the full Year 4 curriculum, including times tables, fractions, problem-solving, charts, 2D and 3D shapes, and other important topics. He does not yet know some of his times tables confidently by heart, such as from 13 to 20 time tables.

We are happy to buy Year 4 study books and workbooks recommended by the tutor. We would like the tutor to explain each topic clearly, teach him how to answer the questions, and then let him practise independently with supervision.

For English, we would like him to improve his reading, spelling and writing. We would like him to read books and be able to explain what he has read, talk about the story and characters, and give his own comments and opinions about the book. We would also like him to improve his storytelling and story writing, including how to structure a story with a clear beginning, middle and end. Good vocabulary, adjectives, punctuation and grammar are also very important to us. He is already learning these skills with us and at school, but we feel that extra support from a tutor would be very helpful.

For Science, we would like the tutor to teach him the topics that are appropriate for his age and Year 4 level. This can include biology, chemistry and physics where appropriate. We simply want him to have a good understanding of the Science curriculum at his current stage, not too advanced and not behind his level.

Our aim is to help him become confident and fully on track with the school curriculum and gradually build strong foundations for his Year 6 SATs.

We are looking for regular lessons during the week on some days after school and at 1 or both weekends.

We are looking for regular lessons during the week and at weekends. During school term time, we would ideally like around four sessions per week, for example two weekday sessions and two weekend sessions. On weekdays, we would prefer lessons to start at around 5:00 or 6:00 pm and finish by around 7:00 pm, depending on the day. One hours session. We would like to work around his after-school clubs, as we do not want him to miss his sports or other activities. The exact days can be agreed depending on the tutor’s availability.

During half terms and school holidays, we may have more flexibility and may wish to book more weekday sessions. We would still like him to have plenty of free time for sports, activities and family time, so the exact days and times can be discussed closer to each school holiday.
