Information about Alex
I am a medical student studying at the Peninsula Medical School and have been based in Truro for the last two years and now am now living in the Exeter area.
I just have completed my 4th year (including passing my finals), and have an `apprenticeship` year of my degree to complete before qualifying. Before doing this I am taking a year out of training to pursue, along with my wife, other medical and non-medical projects.
My age similarity to students allows the professional relationship with them to be different than those they will experience at school/college. I can offer different approaches to those they may have encountered so far.
From my own experience I know that feeling that you are not yet fulfilling your potential, or are being left behind by your peers can be dispiriting. I aim to help students take ownership of their studies, and with a positive attitude work hard to achieve more. At the outset we will jointly decide on the targets of our work together. These could be academic, developmental or organisational.
Once these are agreed and an individual development plan created I am sure we will see all students grow in confidence and academic discipline which ultimately lead to greater success.
Availability: I am privileged to have employment for the next half year which allows me significant autonomy of working pattern, so I am confident of being able to accommodate whatever structure of tutoring works best for my students.
I can offer regularly spaced sessions or more intense tutoring over a short time frame, both of which will allow students to work towards specific agreed goals or targets.
For students applying for medicine or other scientific degree subjects in Autumn 2016, my availability in August and September means I am well placed to support student who are applying at this time.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: My personal and professional experience of a variety of different educational and assessment systems mean I am well placed to help students maximise their potential in their specific discipline and exams.
Throughout my four years at Medical school I have worked regularly with and taught A level and GCSE students as part of Plymouth University`s Widening Access to Medicine programme and its online academic mentoring scheme.
Although I have no formal teaching qualifications my degree included a year long module entitled "doctors as teachers" and so I have good awareness of teaching models and approaches beyond my own educational experience.
I also have significant experience working with children and young people in the setting of local youth groups.
I achieved good GCSE and A-level results, and have continued to enjoy and do well in my studies at the undergraduate level.
GSCE: 7 A*s 3 As and a B.
A-level: 3 A*s 1 A and a B at AS level (Maths, Biology, General Studies, Chemistry and History)

Alex has built a good rapport with our teenage son (very important for motivation!) and is organised, punctual and enthusiastic.
