*** Update: I am not currently taking on any new students, sorry! Best of luck in your hunt for a tutor ***
Hello! I`m a friendly and qualified Spanish tutor and translator with lots of experience, living in south east London. I work as an academic librarian and freelance translator during the week.
I`ve lived in Spain a lot: I find its culture, history and languages fascinating, and I still have a lot of Spanish friends that I stay in touch with!
As a tutor I like to tailor my approach on an individual basis. It totally depends on your requirements. I try to keep my lessons a fair mix of listening, speaking, reading and writing, all with good momentum and interest levels. You tell me what interests you - from One Direction to global warming! - and we`ll incorporate it into activities so that you are more engaged with your learning.
My speciality is grammar: helping you overcome any grammar-related fears in foreign languages, to get you confident about your own ability to comprehend how language works and start manipulating it yourself
Availability: I am flexible on my availability: evenings work best for me, from about 6.30pm onwards.
Willing to travel: 1 miles
Experience: I have tutored lots of GCSE Spanish students in a 1-1 setting. Students often want to focus on recapping the basics, which they feel they have missed out on at school because of the fast-pace at which the secondary education system progresses. This is why working with a 1-1 tutor can be so beneficial.
(Another problem with the system which they have expressed, is the `parroting` and unrealistic chunks of tired Spanish they are having to learn to pass exams/hit the mark scheme quota. This is not real Spanish furthermore this method hasn`t changed since I was at school! When I first touched down in Spain I couldn`t believe how different my classroom-Spanish was to real conversation).
I`ve also worked with young professionals who want to improve on the Spanish they learnt while travelling/on holiday. This can take more self-discipline, since there`s no exams to aim for, but the rewards and sense of achievement are fantastic.
In the past, my 1-1 students have all passed their GCSE, AS and A2 exams with B`s, A`s and A stars. Moreover, we have built good relationships together and learnt from each other along the way.
Regarding school classroom teaching, I have taught in the UK and abroad: Young Learners of 5+ years, through teenagers and up to adults. The majority of my experience is with teenagers.
