Information about Beverley
I am a Devon-based tutor that offers one to one tuition in chemistry and biology. I can teach in either the Exeter area or the Cullompton area.
After completing my honours degree in Biological Medicinal Chemistry, I remained at the University of Exeter to achieve a distinction in Bioinformatics (MSc) before progressing to a research-led PhD in `Systems Biology` (a combination of cellular biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microscopic & computer programming techniques). Here, I studied the secondary metabolite signature of the soil-friendly fungus ~Trichoderma hamatum~ in order to determine any biocontrol or plant growth promoting ability. In addition, I became an Associate of the HEA (Higher Education Authority) whilst at the University thus allowing me to teach at HE.
I am an experienced conference speaker and can offer valuable advice on how to construct and present powerpoint presentations if required.
Tutoring Approach:
My tutoring approach will depend entirely on the student as determined by age and current ability.
I may follow a student-led approach to determine specific areas of focus or, alternatively, the student may prefer to chronologically work through the course.
In my opinion, it doesn`t matter if the student is starting afresh or just employing me to embellish their current learning - I know that any gaps in a student`s basic understanding will undermine their future potential! In order to achieve improved grades I assess the student`s current status, encourage self critical evaluation and provide the necessary literature for the course.
Each unit is covered by a series of class-led exercises that develop into an end-of-module test. Following this, homework usually consists of a longer test designed to challenge new theories covered in the module. Once complete, we will progress to the next subject matter.
In addition to understanding the syllabus, I offer invaluable guidance on exam techniques and how to present your answers scientifically & in the appropriate format.
Availability: Depends on availability and other teaching commitments thus open to discussion.
I do not travel more than 5 miles (one way) and I charge petrol if I travel. Please note that fees are per student but a discount is offered to 2+ students
I AM ONLY AVAILABLE ON:
Due the current health issues affecting everyone, I am available to tutor via the internet; preferably Skype.
Please see my updated timetable for availability.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: During my studies at the University of Exeter, I became involved with undergraduate supervision in both organic/inorganic chemistry and biochemistry practical laboratory work (GLP Good Laboratory Practice). In addition to this, I was responsible for undergraduate tutor groups, health & safety and chairing the SSLC committee (Staff-Student Liaison Committee).
During (and since leaving academia), I began teaching A level Chemistry and Biology in a private capacity for 5 years before joining the Exeter Tutorial College in September 2012. Here, I teach chemistry in both group and 1-2-1 tutorials covering most exam boards at GCSE and A level (EdExcel, AQA, OCR A/B, iGCSE). I am also responsible for the management & administration of all chemistry practicals including formal examinations.
In addition to my teaching role, I am an Examiner for OCR chemistry.
