Information about Ben

I am a fourth year DPhil in Ancient History at the University of Oxford, where I also received my MSt in Greek and Roman History. Prior to that, I received a High First for my BA in Ancient History at the University of Exeter.

I have experience of private tutoring in Classical Civilisation and History from GCSE to A-Level, and spent over a year as a Junior Teaching Fellow at the Ashmolean Museum, delivering seminars for Oxford undergraduates.

Although I have a record of outstanding academic excellence at some of the UK`s top institutions, I spent my secondary education in underachieving state schools. As such, I can sympathise with struggling students just as well as I can push high achievers.

Availability: I am highly flexible and can offer online tutoring at a time that suits you best.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I have a large amount of experience with private tutoring for Oxford-based agency Oxford Science Studies. I have taught almost all subjects on the A-Level Classical Civilisation syllabus, as well as various GCSE and A-Level History topics.

I have also received tutorial training at the University of Oxford, and undertook a week-long course on teaching with objects at the Ashmolean Museum. This led to my appointment as a Junior Teaching Fellow at the museum, designing and delivering seminar series to undergraduates based around the museum`s collections.

The teaching methods which I developed at the Ashmolean Museum still form the basis of my approach to teaching: I like to focus on close analysis of primary sources, developing key skills for students and ensuring that lessons are interactive. I am particularly good at helping students to develop their writing abilities and general study skills in order to excel at any level of learning. I am able to help push high achievers to think about history in more sophisticated ways, but I also have experience of helping struggling students. As someone who came from an underachieving state school (and was the first in my family to achieve A-Levels, let alone a degree), I can sympathise with students who are having difficulties with their learning environment.

I can offer various types of sessions, including content revision, writing classes, exam preparation, and study and research skills.
