Dedicated and professional Oxford-educated tutor with 6 years of experience teaching English Literature and English Language in person and online.

Hi, I’m Liam. I’ve been working as an English tutor in Reading and online for 6 years, teaching students of varying abilities from KS3 up to A-level. I provide highly personalised one-to-one tuition, adjusting my approach to meet the specific needs of each student. I have a proven track record of helping students to achieve or exceed their target grades in KS3 school assessments, GCSEs, and A-levels. I am a highly motivated, organised, and ambitious person, and always aim to encourage these same qualities in my students. I have an excellent academic record, having achieved A*s for A-level English Literature and English Language, before going on to complete a degree in English Language and Literature at St Catherine’s College, Oxford. I have completed an Enhanced DBS check and will provide a copy of this certificate to all new clients.

My teaching style is one of patience and understanding. I aim to make my lessons a space in which students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as this is crucial for them to improve both their ability and self-confidence. Unlike a school teacher who may have to juggle 30+ children at any one time in a classroom, I can focus my attention solely on the student and be there to support and guide them closely each lesson. Although I do expect my students to be punctual and organised, I provide structure and organisation for them wherever I can, aiming to encourage them to develop their own self-discipline and good study habits. My emphasis on regular homework with thorough feedback sets me apart from other tutors who often do not provide this facility. I set a homework task each week of no more than 1 hour, which students must handwrite and submit to me before the next lesson via email. I then return the piece of work at the start of the lesson with a level of marking and feedback which exceeds what a school teacher can provide. Although much of my time with students is centred on preparing them for passing examinations, I believe my lessons are also a chance for me to share my love of literature and language with them too.

While all of the above is still relevant to A-level students, I take a much more collaborative approach with sixth formers, aiming to be a supportive and guiding figure who will encourage them to think and learn independently wherever possible.

My work with students is necessarily focused on English, but I have found that my guidance can have a wider positive effect on their attitude to learning and achievement across many other subjects. My end goal is always the same: I want to empower each of my students to become an organised, articulate, and motivated young person who is able to take responsibility for their own learning.

My fee per lesson covers:
- 1 hour of highly personalised tuition with the student (either in-person or online)
- Time spent marking homework, preparing resources, and planning the lesson each week
- Regular feedback and communication with students and parents via email
- Travel costs to and from the student’s home (if in-person tuition)
- A student folder hosted online for organisation of lesson materials, notes, and homework (if online tuition)

I ask that parents commit to at least one 1 hour lesson each week. However, I can also offer 1.5 or 2 hour lessons charged at my standard rate.

I am currently able to travel approx. 8 miles from my home address for in-person lessons; otherwise, I am very happy to offer online lessons.

Here is some example feedback from one of my long-standing clients:

“Liam is an excellent English tutor; he started teaching my son when he was in Year 7. Within six months my son jumped two levels in his teacher’s assessment. He further developed a passion for reading too. The best quality of Liam is that he has bespoke lessons for every child. I know quite a few of my family friends who use Liam for their children and every parent shares the same view. Liam not only just works on the subject (English) but also is a great coach and inspirational personality. His mannerism and conduct influence the child to do well in every subject. My son has also improved in other subjects due to this positive influence. Liam is very professional and friendly which has helped my son to build a very positive relationship with him. My son enjoys every session with Liam and looks forward for the next challenge given to him for his weekly assignment. I am extremely happy with Liam’s thoroughness and the content. He always ensures that lessons are in line with the school curriculum. My elder son who is in university now had English tuition while in secondary school from several tutors, but Liam is way above any tutor we had in past. We consider ourselves to be very lucky to have found a tutor like Liam.” – Parent of a student I taught for 4 years (in person and then online) up to the end of his GCSEs in 2023.

Experience: I have 6 years of experience teaching English to a range of different students with different needs. For example, I have helped students who previously failed their English GCSEs to achieve a solid Grade 5 pass in their resits. I have worked with mid-level students who need extra support to secure their target grades, or who wish to push themselves further. At the top end, I have challenged the most capable students who are aiming for top marks but may not be stimulated enough at school. Every single one of my students has shown improvement since starting with me, and those working towards exams have all met or exceeded their school target grades.

For KS3, I have experience helping students with different texts and topics they are studying at school. But I also have extensive experience providing bespoke lessons and schemes of work which are designed to complement what is covered by their teachers. At KS3 there is also the time and space to incorporate significant amounts of reading with the student, so I often read books alongside them and set pages to read for their homework.

For GCSE, I have extensive experience teaching all of the main exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, etc.) for both English Language and English Literature, including a wide range of set texts and poetry anthologies.

For A-level, I have experience teaching several different English Literature and English Language courses, including a range of set texts. I also have particular experience in supporting A-level students who aspire to study English at Oxbridge or Russell Group universities. My experience gaining a place at Oxford from a state comprehensive enables me to give valuable insights about the application process, and I can offer candid advice about what a student must do in order to compete for the most prestigious places. I have experience helping with UCAS applications, ELAT entrance examinations, interview preparation, and extra-curricular reading.

We engaged Liam to tutor our son for his GCSE English language resit. From the first contact we had with him, he was professional and approachable. He worked hard to understand our son`s particular areas of weakness and coached him not just in the language skills he needed but also exam technique and timing, which he had previously struggled with. I was particularly impressed by the quality and detail of the feedback Liam provided on the homework tasks he set. I would scan the completed work and email it to Liam, who returned with it at the next session marked and annotated thoroughly. By the end of 12 sessions, our son felt much more confident walking in to his exams and we were all thrilled when he got the result he needed. Liam is organised, diligent and thorough and very clearly knows his subject very well. We are so grateful for his expertise and would highly recommend him to others.

Liam is a fantastic English tutor. He has been coaching and mentoring my son who is in year 7 for sometime now and has made a huge difference to my son`s English literacy. My son has achieved top set for English at school. I am very confident my son is on right track for GCSE English.

Upon concluding my tuition with Liam, my ability in English has grown dramatically since we began. He has a very understanding and interesting teaching style that engages with me greatly. He finds a consistent balance between guidance and independence for the student that allows for a clear, thorough understanding of a certain text. His manner of discussion often allows me to reach for certain ideas I was not previously aware of and helps expand on my existing ones. The work he assigns is always significant and works well to prepare myself for our sessions. One of the greatest factors of his tuition is the quality of marking that he achieves. It is highly specific and littered with comments that create an insight towards further improvement. Personally, I can say that my writing style and manner of explanation improved most significantly and his commitment towards thorough marking is to be thanked. What has been most useful is his work on UCAS personal statements. Specifically in English, he has been able to offer excellent material for me to read and has helped to hone and refine ideas that are relevant towards my statement. Liam also utilises online tuition very well from using sites such as Learncube (that allow for joint discussion and annotation) and Google Drive (to create an organised area for work and notes). The quality of video and audio is superb and allows for clear, effective teaching. I would highly recommend him as a tutor for English.

Feedback from the GCSE student:

Liam is a fantastic teacher who tailors his lessons to his tutee’s needs. I couldn’t have asked for a better tutor as Liam was always ready to go the extra mile in order to respond to my questions and help me in areas which I was struggling with. Liam also provided me with an abundance of resources that were very helpful, but what I found most important, was his incredible and vast knowledge of the English language which he deposited onto me every lesson. Liam not only helped me drive through my GCSEs, but also showed me to be precise and succinct in my writing, which is a crucial life skill. I would recommend Liam to anyone as his knowledge combined with his friendly personality make his lessons truly outstanding.
