Information about Liam

Dedicated and professional Oxford-educated tutor with 8 years of experience teaching English Literature and English Language in person and online.

Please note: From the start of the 2026-27 academic year, I will now generally only be able to offer online lessons to new students, unless a prospective student is located very close to me and accepts that lessons may have to switch to online at some point during the 2026-27 academic year.

Hi, I’m Liam. I’ve been working as an English tutor in person and online for 8 years, teaching students of varying abilities from KS3 up to undergraduate level. I provide highly personalised one-to-one tuition, adjusting my approach to meet the specific needs of each student. I have a proven track record of helping students to achieve or exceed their target grades in KS3 school assessments, GCSEs, and A-levels. I am a highly motivated, organised, and ambitious person, and always aim to encourage these same qualities in my students. I have an excellent academic record, having achieved A*s for A-level English Literature and English Language, before going on to complete a degree in English Language and Literature at St Catherine’s College, Oxford. I have completed an Enhanced DBS check renewed yearly through the DBS Update Service.

My teaching style is one of patience and understanding. I aim to make my lessons a space in which students feel comfortable asking questions and making mistakes, as this is crucial for them to improve both their ability and self-confidence. Unlike a school teacher who may have to juggle 30+ children at any one time in a classroom, I can focus my attention solely on the student and be there to support and guide them closely each lesson. Although I do expect my students to be punctual and organised, I provide structure and organisation for them wherever I can, aiming to encourage them to develop their own self-discipline and good study habits. Much of my time with students is centred on preparing them for passing examinations, but my lessons are also a chance for me to share my love of literature and language with them too.

My emphasis on regular homework with thorough feedback - far exceeding what a school teacher can provide - sets me apart from other tutors who often do not provide this facility. I set a homework task each week of no more than 1 hour, which students must complete and submit to me before the next lesson. Parents can choose either to pay for an extra 30 mins lesson time to cover the time it takes me to mark the homework ready for the start of the next lesson, or, instead, I will mark the homework alongside the student during the lesson itself.

While much of the above is still relevant for A-level or even undergraduate level, I take a much more collaborative approach with older students, aiming to be a supportive and guiding figure who will encourage them to think and learn independently wherever possible.

My work with students is necessarily focused on English, but I have found that my guidance can have a wider positive effect on their attitude to learning and achievement across many other subjects. My end goal is always the same: I want to empower each of my students to become an organised, articulate, and motivated young person who is able to take responsibility for their own learning.

I ask that parents commit to at least one 1.5 hour lesson each week for regular lessons (like a `double lesson` at school). I have in the past offered 1 hour lessons, and will still do so if parents insist, but find that one hour goes too quickly and does not leave enough time for sustained work with the student, especially is marking homework in the lesson.

My fee covers:
- Per hour in-lesson personalised tuition with the student
- Time spent preparing resources and planning the lesson each week
- Regular feedback and communication with students and parents via email
- A student folder hosted online for organisation of lesson materials, notes, and homework

(Homework marking outside of lesson time is not included and is charged as 1 x 0.5 hr slot before each lesson. Otherwise, marking takes place within the next lesson.)

Example feedback from previous clients:

“Tuition with Liam was super helpful and we are so glad to have found him! He started tutoring my daughter through online lessons to help her secure her essay and creative writing skills five months before her GCSEs and was brilliant - from the start to the end, he ensured all questions were answered quickly, and all weak points were covered! He gave regular homework that he marked thoroughly and feedback that was highly informative on the particular aspects of improvement which we greatly appreciated. His experience was reflected by his exceptional teaching and simple ways of explaining things - my daughter felt the huge difference this tuition made, and definitely felt much more confident going into her English Language and Literature exams. We would highly recommend Liam for any parent looking for an English tutor, and are so grateful for all the help he has given us throughout these past few months!” – Parent of a Year 11 student I taught online for 5 months leading up to her GCSE exams in 2024.

“Liam is an excellent English tutor; he started teaching my son when he was in Year 7. Within six months my son jumped two levels in his teacher’s assessment. He further developed a passion for reading too. The best quality of Liam is that he has bespoke lessons for every child. I know quite a few of my family friends who use Liam for their children and every parent shares the same view. Liam not only just works on the subject (English) but also is a great coach and inspirational personality. His mannerism and conduct influence the child to do well in every subject. Liam is very professional and friendly which has helped my son to build a very positive relationship with him. My son enjoys every session with Liam and looks forward for the next challenge given to him for his weekly assignment. I am extremely happy with Liam’s thoroughness and the content. He always ensures that lessons are in line with the school curriculum. My elder son who is in university now had English tuition while in secondary school from several tutors, but Liam is way above any tutor we had in past. We consider ourselves to be very lucky to have found a tutor like Liam.” – Parent of a student I taught for 4 years (in person and then online) up to the end of his GCSEs in 2023.

Availability: Please note: I already have very limited availability for the 2026-27 year. Please contact me to secure a regular weekly lesson slot for your child.

Experience: I have 8 years of experience teaching English to a range of different students with different needs. For example, I have helped students who previously failed their English GCSEs to achieve a solid Grade 5 pass in their resits. I have worked with mid-level students who need extra support to secure their target grades, or who wish to push themselves further. At the top end, I have challenged the most capable students who are aiming for top marks but may not be stimulated enough at school. Every single one of my students has shown improvement since starting with me, and those working towards exams have all met or exceeded their school target grades.

For KS3, I have experience helping students with different texts and topics they are studying at school. But I also have extensive experience providing bespoke lessons and schemes of work which are designed to complement what is covered by their teachers. At KS3 there is also the time and space to incorporate significant amounts of reading with the student, so I often read books alongside them and set pages to read for their homework.

For GCSE and iGCSE, I have extensive experience teaching all of the main exam boards (AQA, Edexcel, OCR, Eduqas, Cambridge, etc.) for both English Language and English Literature, including a wide range of set texts and poetry anthologies.

For A-level, I have extensive experience teaching all of the main exam boards for the different English Literature and English Language courses, including a range of set texts. I also have particular experience in supporting A-level students who aspire to study English at Oxbridge or Russell Group universities. My experience gaining a place at Oxford from a state comprehensive enables me to give valuable insights about the application process, and I can offer candid advice about what a student must do in order to compete for the most prestigious places. I have experience helping with UCAS applications, ELAT entrance examinations, interview preparation, and extra-curricular reading.

At university level, I have been able to support and advise students across all three years of a typical undergraduate degree, chiefly for BA English Literature and/or Language degrees. However, I do have some experience supporting undergraduates studying other humanities subjects, chiefly in giving advice and guidance for essay writing skills and study practices.

Liam is an amazing tutor who in just 11 lessons before and during my GCSEs managed to swiftly cover 4 texts as well as strategies for English Language. His advice is specific, helpful and makes it easier to see clearly not only what you need to improve on but also how to do it which is something I think a lot of students struggle with as they do not know where or how to start. He is also very dedicated and even reread a text so that he could teach it to me in time for my exams. With his help, I managed to go from a 7 in English Lang in my mocks to a 9 in the actual GCSE and a low 8 in mocks to an almost 9 in my English Lit GCSE! I would highly recommend him as a tutor and you can see his enthusiasm for English which makes exploring deeper concepts much more interesting.
