Information about Tom
Hi!
I`m currently studying a Masters in Systems and Synthetic Biology at Imperial College London having graduated with a 1st in Biochemistry. I studied Maths, Further Maths, Biology and Chemistry at A-level achieving A*A*A*A.
Over several years working with pupils, I have found that students can be less intimidated by a younger tutor and I aim to make sessions feel less like teacher-pupil and more peer to peer. I find this allows students to open up more about what they are struggling with and be less anxious about making mistakes, which is key to gaining confidence in the Maths and Sciences. As well as this, I think the most important aspect of my tutoring style is to ensure my students understand, not just simply know the Maths and Science that they are working on. This is especially important as exams become tougher and more understanding based. I believe that understanding is the key to unlocking higher grades, at any level of study.
To make sure my students understand the topics they are studying I tailor my tutoring style to each pupil. Some kinetic learners will prefer hands on activities to demonstrate a principal, whereas visual learners may prefer a diagram to explain the same concept. This is often overlooked at school, where a teacher can only explain a principle in one way, as to tailor an explanation to every student in the class would be impossible.
With all of this in mind, I aim to achieve success with my students with a varied and in-depth approach that engages their interest, boosts confidence and leads to exam success.
Please feel free to contact me for more information or discuss a pupil`s specific needs.
