Experience: While my biggest asset in tutoring is my academic qualifications (BSc in Chemistry, maths and Physics, MSc in Chemistry and PhD in Physics) I mostly rely on the soft skills such as empathy, being able to really listen and clear communication. Since not every child study the same way, so it is necessary for me to have an initial consultation with the students and/or parents so that I can understand the needs and challenges. From the information I gather in this meeting, I tailor the study program to suits individual needs. Whenever possible, I also try to give an indication, where the student can be at the end of the tutoring sessions. Once I start tutoring I rely frequent testing (usually at the end of each topic) and on the feed back from the student, to do necessary changes to study materials.
Over the years, I have seen that with some children it is the lack of confidence and self motivation, which becomes the main culprit for not achieving the full potential of a child. Therefore, I also look into ways of encouraging and motivating my students. These tools help me to build the confidence in students and getting them to achieve the grades they deserve.
