Information about Beth

Hello! My name is Beth, and I am an experienced, qualified English teacher and academic tutor based in West Sussex.

After completing my BA in English Literature at Durham University and MLitt in Women, Writing and Gender at St Andrews, I embarked on my career in secondary education. Teaching in both the private and public sectors, I have taught English Literature and English Language to a range of year groups across KS3, KS4 and KS5. I received my PGCE in Secondary English in 2021 with Distinction from the University of Sussex.

During my two years in the private sector, I took my KS4 group through their GCSEs, teaching 100% live lessons during the national lockdown and producing their Teacher Assessed Grades. I have also worked closely and successfully with students with a range of SEN diagnoses, and I can tailor my resources and lessons accordingly to ensure all my students flourish.

As well as my experience within secondary education, I enjoy working with younger KS2 students, creating joyful and energetic lessons which build confidence and enthusiasm – along with the skillset – of my younger students.

Alongside tuoting, I am also completing my PhD in English at the University of Sussex. I worked as a Doctoral Tutor for two years, where I was responsible for the teaching and assessment of undergraduate students.

I was an A-Level examiner for AQA, English Literature, for two years. Now I work with OCR as a GCSE examiner, as I wish to expand and deepen my knowledge and expertise across exam boards and qualifications.

I am incredibly passionate about literacy and want to encourage a love of reading in all my students through my creative and exciting approach. A love of reading is the beginning of an incredible lifelong journey, and I am committed to helping my students navigate this as successfully as possible, overcoming any barriers they may face together.

I have also recently co-authored a book on Macbeth`s Soliloquies, available for purchase here:
