Information about Hugh

I am a PGCE qualified, experienced teacher who has worked at both state and independent schools in London for the past 6 years: delivering full curriculums to students aged 7-16, as both a teacher and tutor. After nearly a decade of working with young people (including as a mentor prior to teaching), I have found that in order to get the best out of them, you need to give young people the best of you. This is something that I achieve by building strong rapports with all of my students, getting to know them as an individual, and by making sure that all of my lessons are fun: featuring their own interests where I can. I do this based on my belief that any student learns better when they feel that their teacher/ tutor is genuinely there to help them and wants the best for them.

I have developed a style which promotes a positive attitude towards learning and helps my students achieve beyond expectations. This is built on mutual respect and the idea that what you learn should not be dictated by your age. Instead, I strive to push students to achieve beyond what they think is possible by breaking a subject down, so that they understand it, and then building it beyond their expected capabilities. This has led to me teaching curriculums which often include materials which are expected to suit students who are up to 3 years older than my own.

However, I am aware that every student learns at their own pace and do not set unrealistic expectations of my students. Therefore, I prepare ability appropriate tasks for each student and engage in constant discussion with them, so that I can assess and alter plans for them as necessary. I also have experience working with students who have various SEND requirements, as well as students who may have different emotional needs.

I have a strong subject knowledge which covers all of the primary curriculum and extends to 11+ and KS3 mathematics, as well as GCSE History. I am also a fully qualified TEFL and TESOL teacher, as well as being able to tutor in Psychology and Sociology based on my own studies (Sociology and Criminology BSc hons and an ongoing MSc Psychology).

Please feel free to message me if you need any further information, or to enquire about specific students or subjects.

Availability: I am currently working as a full time tutor and homeschool teacher, thus have availability during the day and in the evenings throughout the week. Please feel free to message me and check for my exact availability.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have tutored professionally for the past six years, but have developed my skills since tutoring my peers in college. My students include those who have attended the schools that I have taught in, as well as those recommended to work with me.
I have worked with students aged 5 -15 in a range of subjects and have seen all of them make improvements that have taken them to at least a year above where they originally were. This has been seen specifically in my math tuition where my year 6 students have managed to complete work suited to those in year 8 and 9.
Most recently, I have helped GCSE history students to achieve level 9s through exam and coursework preparation.
