Information about Emma
I am currently at Durham University studying English literature.
I have really enjoyed the tutoring I have done in the past and my enthusiasm for learning comes across in my tutoring style. I take great pleasure in seeing the leaps made by pupils with one-on-one support, and I encourage pupils to experience this same joy in their own achievements.
I can tutor English (language or literature) from primary school to A-level.
I achieved 3 A*s at A-level in English language, English literature, and History. I also achieved 9 A*s at GCSE, including in English language, English literature and Maths.
Availability: I currently have a very flexible schedule so can accommodate to daytime, evening and weekend tutorials.
Willing to travel: 50 miles
Experience: I tutored a Year 13 student for her English language A-level. She had been struggling with exam technique and her written expression in essays. We started by going over the course content, ensuring she fully grasped the more difficult concepts and terminology in the course. We then looked at how to apply her knowledge more effectively to exam questions, wor through essays she had already written and me directing her as to how to improve. Her clarity of written expression improved dramatically as I challenged her to be even more precise in how she expressed her ideas.
She achieved an A in her A-level, jumping up three grade boundaries from her mock exams.
I have also tutored a Year 9 pupil in English language, English literature and History. This was to help him prepare for the jump to GCSE-level content, particularly improving his analysis of poetry for his English literature GCSE. We revised the key poetic features together (e.g. imagery, tone, structure) then worked to apply these to the First World War poetry he was studying at school. I also encouraged him to take a similar approach to the non-fiction texts he was studying in English language, and I saw a definite improvement in his close-reading skills. We worked on essay style and technique, which improved dramatically as he took increasing care to formulate his ideas and plan his essays.
I also informally tutored my younger sister through her English literature GCSE and A-level, assisting with coursework and study sessions in the run-up to her exams.
