Information about Aileen

I am a highly experienced primary school teacher, recently retired from full time teaching but not from education. I am full of energy and enthusiasm still for teaching children and making learning fun, especially for those children who find it a struggle. I find my years of experience in the classroom and in life generally, enable me to bring a richer and wiser understanding of the nature of learning and children’s response to teaching than I did in my younger days, which children appreciate. I am an excellent practitioner, having taught for over 25 years, from ages 5 – 11, as a support teacher and class teacher and Deputy Head. My subject knowledge of all areas of the primary curriculum is really good, and I have developed considerable expertise in providing really effective activities which ensure children are motivated and also very successful in making progress. Because of these interests, I have carried out considerable research, by myself, with other teachers and also with Trinity St David University in Swansea, on many areas of teaching. These include developing really positive ways of managing children’s behaviour, nurturing their emotional well-being and also increasing their confidence in themselves as learners. I am currently working with several schools to develop teachers’ skills in enabling pupils to become more independent.
I am very committed to high standards of attainment, and in my role as an Estyn Primary school inspector, which I am still involved in, I have been extremely fortunate to have visited many schools and seen how well all children can do, when we get things just right for them. I do have high expectations and make sure that children are challenged to work hard and achieve their full potential by ensuring that I build a really good relationship with them, provide enjoyable meaningful learning experiences and listen to what they need. My friendly, warm and good natured personality and positive attitude, along with good professional and personal qualities, almost always enables all children I work with to thrive, and if this is not the case I am the first to discuss this with both parents and pupils.
I plan with the pupils, so that we agree the learning goals together. I use a mix of direct teaching and independent challenges, including use of ICT and various games. I have a wealthy of resources gathered over many years of teaching and can always find something that children will enjoy learning about. Although I am retired, I have kept up to speed with current changes in education through my other educational work previously described. Therefore, whatever the children do will be relevant to their work in their own classrooms. I always use a baseline assessment for whatever we are focusing on, so that pupils and parents can see the progress made.

Experience: I graduated with my Teaching qualification from Totley Thornbridge College, Sheffield, back in July 1977, and since then I have been involved in Education in many different ways. I taught in Y6 for several years in Pontybrenin in Gorseinon, before having a career break to bring up my family for about 10 yrs. On returning to teaching, I taught as a support teacher, working with pupils who found learning difficult. These experiences really laid the foundation for my interest in how we could engage reluctant and failing learners, which has continued to grow throughout my working life. After a while I went back to classroom teaching and taught for many years both in infant and the junior classes. In 2007 I achieved an MA, on developing Independent Learners and moved schools to became a Deputy Head, in Tre Uchaf Primary School in Gorseinon. During my time there, I taught in year 2, and became very involved in developing effective ways to manage challenging behaviour, which led to an MPhil, for the research I carried out, working with other schools and Trinity St David Swansea University. Leaving the classroom to move on to new experiences, I retired, and have become a part time Estyn school inspector, which allows me to see many lessons and meet pupils and staff, adding even further to my experiences. I am also engaged in a research project working with teachers in Neath and Port Talbot, to help them develop increased independence for their pupils in their classrooms. I am currently also taking a Counselling Diploma, to become a Psychotherapist. I hope to use this to work with children and young people in schools eventually, who are struggling with emotional issues such as anxiety or bullying. I am working part time in MIND for this course, with adults who need counselling. All of these experiences contribute very well to creating a warm and effective learning experience for pupils in tuition sessions.
