Information about Lesley
I have always wanted to teach and love working with young people of any age.. I am patient, understanding supportive and highly aware of the need to enable the student to achieve.
I work through praise and careful guidance to ensure the student gets the most from the 1:1 contact. I believe in a child-centred approach to learning and always aim to work for and with the student. I was Senior Teacher/ Teacher in charge of the medical provision in a complex pupil referral unit where I headed up a skilled team of teachers who worked on a one to one and small group basis with students who had a variety of medical /special needs. These young people effectively prepared for their GCSE examinations and were successful in their college applications . I have taught for over 40 years in a range of environments including, classes of 30, 1:1, small groups and in students` homes in an outreach capacity. I am an Advanced Skills Teacher supporting staff across the county of Dorset. I have also mentored and guided trainee teachers enabling them to positively achieve their professional qualifications.
I am very aware of the current concerns regarding the mental health of our young people and am to support any young person experiencing anxiety, worry or difficulties in school.
I have widened my approach to teaching offering online, 1:1 sessions which support examination specifications at a variety of levels. This work is tailored made for those I work with. I have prepared for most examination boards, including those in Scotland and Wales.
Availability: Monday to Wednesday inclusive. Thursday I try to keep for any unforeseen clashes or problems. I rarely teach at the weekend.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: I was Head of Drama in a school in Dorset for 17 years. During that time I worked extensively with children of all ages and abilities. I am educated to Masters level also holding a BEd initial degree and PGCE. I am a Senior Leader holding the NPQSL qualification. I have trained teachers and guided those new to the profession successfully through the early stages of their career. I have also supported HLTA s in their applications to become fully qualified teachers.
I have directed numerous school productions which has given me an excellent knowledge of plays and productions for use in English and Drama teaching. I am also a published writer and this aspect of English Literature enhances my ability with creative and imaginative projects.
I have taught adults GCSE Psychology with a very good success rate. I have enjoyed the opportunities teaching in both the comprehensive and adult sectors have given me and I hope to continue my teaching through a more individual and 1:1 basis by tutoring and supporting tutees as required.
I always listen to the requirements of my students and tailor my teaching to their needs. I always aim to work in a positive and successful environment using what is most effective for the specific individual. I am a good listener and have a good sense of humour. I believe a positive working environment is essential to the success of an individual.
Working online with a variety of ages has allowed me to create resources, presentations and materials which allow for success. I am also aware that the more anxious students can find online learning intimidating and for this reason I always aim to use methods and approaches which allow the individual to feel comfortable and supported in their learning.
