Information about Stuart

Hello. I am a PGCE Secondary Trained teacher, and I have taught Maths at Exeter College and Data Analysis at Doncaster College at degree level. Recent training for my personal development, to be up to date, includes SKE Maths at Plymouth University and enhanced teacher training on the TSST programme with Exeter Maths School.

I am a patient teacher who can really understand when you get stuck. I never get fed up and can explain things carefully and slowly until you understand.

I know how to break everything down into small steps. I will fit what I do to just what you need and listen carefully to find what works best for you.

I find 1-to-1 tuition rewarding as I see children and young people build their confidence as mathematicians – my favourite saying is “Yes, you can!”

✔;;;;;;;;;; Upper Primary from Year 2 onwards
✔;;;;;;;;;; Secondary Maths up to and including Y12
✔;;;;;;;;;; Face to Face Tuition (Exeter) continuing during the coronavirus pandemic, at two metre distance
✔;;;;;;;;;; On-line tuition during coronavirus pandemic, as an alternative

100 percent of my private GCSE resit students have achieved a good pass, gaining a Grade 5 or above.

Recently I finished tutoring F, because her parents were delighted: she had moved from the "bottom table"; in her numeracy classes in Y5 up to achieving at age-appropriate level in just nine months. Working closely with her class teacher, we jointly targeted the same core skills. After the first lesson with me, F`s teacher reported that, for the first time, she had started to put her hand up in numeracy.

I currently tutor several students in Y10 and T, who`s in Y6. His mum wanted extra help for him, but Tom didn`t really want lessons after school and thought he was doing fine at school. Mum says: "Despite Tom`s best intentions, he cannot but enjoy his lessons!"

I also work as a teacher of adults with limited English, so I am skilled in re-phrasing questions to make them easy to understand.

Using visual and other innovative techniques and numeracy games to help children enjoy their learning, I help students move to the place where they believe: “Yes I can!”

Availability: I am working from home until the autumn, due to the pandemic. Therefore I am more flexible than usual and I currently have some availability over the school summer holidays between
Monday, Wednesday, Thursday 0830-1900 (lessons starting up to 1900 and ending at 2000);
Tuesday 0830-1645;
Friday 0830-1630

Lesson length is flexible from 45 minutes - 90 minutes, depending on a student`s ability to concentrate. Children in Y2 and Y3 often do best with 45 minute lessons.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I`ve taught maths to children aged between 6-18 over the past 18 years. I`ve helped children get to Level 4 in their SATS, and young people to achieve grades 5-9 in their GCSEs. I gained a Distinction on Plymouth University`s Maths Skills Enhancement Course. It`s run by one of the best maths teachers from Ivybridge Community College and I learned the very latest techniques for success in maths.

My rates may be higher than some local tutors, but you get what you pay for with me - a Cambridge graduate with a total of 22 years teaching experience and a proven track record of improving children`s confidence and skills.

I always try to show children more than one strategy for each area in maths so they can choose the best way that suits them. Your first lesson is FREE.

You only need one maths tutor for your child - so choose the best there is in Exeter, because your child deserves nothing but the best!
