Information about Angela

I’m an artist, an art educator and a teacher of English to speakers of other languages (TESOL).

I was so lucky that as a teenager I got a place at art school and was taught to draw and paint properly by the most inspirational artist and teacher one could ever wish for: 45 years later, I’m still drawing and painting, and still loving it. I’m also still using his teaching methods to help my students to realise that they, too, really can draw and paint.

Discovering why those methods worked became my first degree dissertation topic and then a life-long interest. In a nutshell, it is switching you from working in the logical, linear, left hemisphere of the brain that we spend most of the day functioning in across to the creative, non-sequential, non-verbal right hemisphere of the brain. In this mode, time can fly or stand still, it is as relaxing as it is stimulating, and you become so much more aware of the colours, shapes and patterns surrounding you.

Being both an artist and art educator is the best of all worlds: I get to draw and paint a myriad of subjects in any media that either I or my commissioner desire from pet portraits to landscapes, flowers and still life to people and the places where they live, depicted in acrylics, watercolours, oils, pastel or pencil. Having had the enjoyment of creating those works of art, I then know that when they are sold, they go on to give years of pleasure to their new owners. Then I also get to see all my students blossom and progress as they learn how to create their own unique works of art at the same time as they use their art to de-stress and forget about the problems of the world around them. A real win/win situation!

After completing my first degree (BEd (Hons) subject specialist in Art and Design and English) I started teaching in secondary schools, then became a journalist and newspaper editor, then a university lecturer, before moving to France in 2014 where I taught art and English as a foreign or second language.

We had a holiday base in Normandy where I hosted French children, and some adults, on English immersion holidays. Most of the school children were preparing for their English exams in the French Baccalaureate system. Those on immersion holidays would live with us for a week just learning and practising English.

However, my regular ESOL students were those on weekly lessons which were conducted on Skype. Most of these students were adults and most wanted to improve their English for business purposes and to gain promotion. Teaching online meant that they could be anywhere in the world, so I had students in Spain, Switzerland, Italy, France and Greece which meant that I learned a lot about those countries from conversations with the students. Another win/win!

Experience: I have 45 years drawing & painting experience and 39 years of teaching experience. My first degree was a Bachelor of Education (Hons) degree subject specialist in Art and Design and English. After starting my teaching career in UK secondary schools, mainly teaching Art and English, I added my first Cert TESOL qualification. My second degree was Master of Education specialising in Lifelong Learning.

I later became a journalist and newspaper editor, then a university lecturer and director so although I used my English skills, I put the TESOL teaching aside until we moved to France. In 2014 I updated my Cert TESOL, this time specialising in Business English, and from 2014 to 2019 I lived in France where I taught art and English as a foreign or second language.

My art students have ranged in age from 12 to 87-years-old. Most of them are adults who loved art in their younger days but were either told by teachers or other adults that they didn`t have enough talent so they gave up trying, or they were ones who liked art but then life got in the way, and now they want to get back into drawing and painting but don`t know where to start. With my classes they all realise that they really can draw and paint after all.

Pre-Covid, I taught mainly small groups in classes either for beginners/returners or intermediate/advanced - I always keep classes small so that they all got individual attention. In the beginners/returners classes I taught painting using step-by-step methods where students followed me in creating a painting from initial sketch to finished work. With drawing classes they followed carefully structured sets of exercises to ensure they switched onto the right hemisphere of the brain and the particular way that artists "see" when working in this mode. With intermediate/advanced classes it was often the case that each of them were working on different subjects and in different media, so I was constantly circulating offering guidance, advice and encouragement. I teach drawing in pencil, charcoal and pastel, and I teach painting classes in watercolours or acrylics.

Since Covid, all my teaching has been online and obviously each lesson is therefore tailored to the levels and interests of the particular student. In art classes, my aim is to help students unlock their creative potential by offering them a range of tools and techniques and loads of support and encouragement without imposing my style on their work. My philosophy is that there are no wrong answers, just experiments from which we learn and progress.

While living in France I taught both art and English as a foreign or second language. We had a holiday base in Normandy where I hosted French children, and some adults, on English immersion holidays. Most of the school children were preparing for their English exams in the French Baccalaureate system. Those on immersion holidays would live with us for a week learning and practising English. They would have a mixture of formal English language lessons and a range of activities to participate in to give them real-life practice in using, hearing and experiencing the language.

However, my regular students were those on weekly lessons which were conducted on Skype. Most of these students were adults and most wanted to improve their English for business purposes and to gain promotion. Teaching online meant that they could be anywhere in the world, so I had students in Spain, Switzerland, Italy, France and Greece.
