Information about Claire

Subjects offered: History, Sociology, English Language and English Literature.

I am a full-time online tutor with 16 years’ secondary-school teaching experience, five years teaching EFL abroad and nine years tutoring full time.

I teach History at KS3, GCSE and A level, covering OCR, AQA and Edexcel specifications. My GCSE experience includes the Cold War, Migration, Anglo-Saxon and Norman England, Elizabethan England, Crime and Punishment, Medicine Through Time, Germany and the USA, 1954–75. A-level topics include the Tudors, Russia 1851–1953, Mao’s China, Industrialisation, Franco’s Spain, Fascist Italy, the Crusades, the English Civil War, Modern Britain, the French Revolution, the Witch Craze, and Weimar and Nazi Germany. I also support coursework research in particular the analysis and evaluation of interpretations.

I teach A-level Sociology for AQA and OCR, plus AQA GCSE Sociology, covering topics including Education, Crime and Deviance, Beliefs, the Family, Culture and Identity, Health, Stratification, Global Development and Media. Lessons are tailored both towards embedding content and exam technique. I have taught the whole 2 year AQA course to several homeschooled students.

I also teach AQA and OCR GCSE English Language and Literature. The texts I have taught include Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, An Inspector Calls, A Christmas Carol, Blood Brothers, Animal Farm, Pride and Prejudice and both AQA poetry anthologies.

Lessons combine clear content teaching, regular retrieval and revision activities, and focused exam-question practice, but are always prepared according to the specific needs of each student. My students practice how to construct, analyse and evaluate answers, and I am experienced at adapting resources for students’ abilities, learning preferences, SEN and mental-health needs. I have considerable experience of teaching students with additional needs.

I have taught History and Sociology for 25 years, and have many years experience of teaching English. In addition I have marked exam papers for History and Sociology. In terms of results, students often improve by two or more grades, whilst this academic year I taught the complete AQA Sociology course to a home-schooled student who jumped from a predicted D grade to achieving an A*.

Availability: As I am now a full time tutor, I can offer lessons Monday - Thursday throughout the day and early evenings.

Willing to travel: Home Only

Experience: I am a teacher and tutor with over 25 years’ experience. I began teaching English as a Foreign Language to students of all ages (from 3 -70) and abilities and spent time working in London, Tokyo and Madrid. In both Japan and Spain, I also worked as a private tutor for both children and adults.

For 16 years I worked as a fully qualified teacher in a secondary school, specialising in History and Sociology with particular focus on teaching GCSE and A Level. I was a Head of Department for both History and Sociology.

I now work full time as an online tutor offering History KS3-KS5 (all exam boards), Sociology KS4 and KS5 (AQA and OCR) as well as GCSE English Language and Literature (AQA and OCR)

I have in-depth knowledge of the specifications of a number of different exam boards and have successfully taught a wide variety of topics with regards to History, English and Sociology at KS3, KS4 and KS5.
