Information about Jonathan
I have a Masters degree in Mechanical Engineering, a Master of Arts from the Royal College of Art and Master of Science from Imperial College of London. I am currently working as an academic at the University of Edinburgh.
Having studied engineering and design to a high level I can confidently provide help with Physics, Maths, Design and Engineering based problems to a range of ages and abilities.
Aside from my academic studies I have been a keen rower, winning at Henley Royal Regatta and training over 10 times a week alongside my studies. My time as an oarsman taught me that hard work and perseverance will eventually pay off, an idea which I would like to give any students I teach.
I spend any holidays climbing mountains, cycling across continents and working on my bicycles.
I believe that each individual will have a way of learning which allows them to succeed. Before starting a session I would find out what the student thinks works best then work alongside them, filling in gaps in understanding or knowledge. To finish off I would go through some examples and help as they work through them so that they see the practical aspect of what they have learnt. At the end of lessons I will set a few problems to be marked with the aim of assessing the student`s progress and identifying problem areas to be worked on.
I will make myself available out of hours for follow up questions to encourage a more continuous learning pattern.
Availability: Evenings, Weekends
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have 4 years experience tutoring in a range of subjects, including Mathematics, Mechanical Engineering, Electronic Engineering, Design and Technology, Physics and Chemistry.
I have had tutees from adult learners on day release for professional qualifications to students preparing for 13+ examinations.
I have coached rowing regularly for the last 6 years. I helped during the summer terms when I was at school coaching beginners, took a gap year coaching rowing at a school in Australia and have helped coach the novice rowers at Imperial College.
