Information about Mark

Hi, I’m Mark, Over the last few months, I’ve had extensive experience of teaching maths online and have developed innovative ways to engage my students. I am prepared to teach in-person with social distancing observed.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: With over 40 years’ experience I have taught maths at all levels up to A-level in secondary schools and colleges in Nottingham, London, Huddersfield, Leeds and Sheffield. This year I’ve been teaching GCSE Maths at a beauty college in Sheffield. I have a degree in maths and a PGCE teaching qualification in maths and programming.

I’ve been teaching GCSE Maths online every week since the middle of March 2020 at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. I use Zoom with the built-in whiteboard and also BitPaper. I share past papers and worksheets with students and by using a graphics tablet can write tips or explanations directly on the whiteboard. Both Zoom and BitPaper are free to students and can be easily accessed by mobile, tablet or laptop.

The feedback I’ve had this year from my GCSE Maths students is that I have made complex problems more understandable with a clear approach that breaks down each topic area with simple steps and worked examples. They appreciated my patience and approachability when they just “didn’t get it”. For me, as a bit of a maths geek, the reward was the satisfaction of seeing that “light bulb moment” when my students finally understood a problem and could move forward with the confidence to tackle new questions at a much higher level than they thought possible.

I have a large bank of digital resources including all the past exam papers for both AQA and Edexcel exam boards for the new 2017 GCSE Maths specification. Alongside this, I have warm-up and worked exam questions from the 6 main topic areas, worksheets, online videos and exam paper analysers. The analysers help students to pinpoint which topics they need to improve on and show the national average for each question so that students can see which questions most students found difficult.
