Information about Katie

Hi there

My name is Katie and I am currently living in Newcastle after recently moving from Leeds. I also lived in Birmingham before this for 3 years. I was born in Durham and spent most of my studying in the North East before moving down to Birmingham to begin my teacher training. In Birmingham, I taught A Level and BTEC Law. I then moved to Leeds where I taught on the Institute of Legal Executives course (CILEX) and the Access to Law programme aimed at students 19+ who are looking to start a career in law. I also supervised two undergraduate students who were completing their dissertation for their final year and taught on the undergraduate programme (LLB). I am now currently teaching and programme leading on the FdA in Policing and Criminal Justice Studies programme at Newcastle College University Centre.

During my time in Birmingham, I taught on the AS/A2 Law programme following the AQA syllabus, and the BTEC Certificate and SubDiploma in Applied Law. These courses covered the areas of Family law, EU law, English Legal System, Criminal law, and Tort law, all at a level 3 standard. My students studying the A2 Law programme this year had a 100% pass rate, a 40% A/B grade achievement and all students hit their target grades. My BTEC students achieved a 100% pass rate with 90% of those grades being an overall Merit, Distinction or Distinction*. I have students off to universities such as the University of Birmingham, the University of Liverpool and Kings College London.

Alongside my teaching, I was a private tutor for a student sitting her LLB at Aston University. This includes one to one tutoring, reviewing assignments, exam preparation and collecting research for her work. Areas in which I have helped her include Commercial Law, Family Law, European Law, Equity and Trusts, Medical Law, Land Law, and we are currently working on her dissertation proposal, which is in the area of forced marriage. Since we have been working together, her overall grade has seen an improvement of just under 10%, increasing from a 2:2 in first year to a 2:1 in second year.

Whilst in Birmingham, I also worked as an academic facilitator for a portion of my employment role. I assisted students with learning difficulties and helped some of my law students who needed extra support in their work. This role demanded a level of patience and respect towards students who need that extra support, along with a wide range of academic knowledge in several different areas. I worked with students who had dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and Aspergers, and I worked as part of a team who would work on getting the best out of these students, making modified lesson plans, handouts and assisting teachers to ensure these students were included in their lessons.

Regarding my academic achievements, I have a Law degree, a PGCE in Post Compulsory Education, Qualified Teacher Status and a Masters in Law from the University of Birmingham. My areas of interest include Sports law, European and International law, Discrimination law, Human Rights law and Criminal law.

I look forward to hearing from you!
Katie
