Information about Martin
BOOKED FOR ALL AFTERSCHOOL AND EVENING SLOTS UNTIL JUNE 2026
Shouldn`t English be more than just slowly trawling through a book and trying to guess what the teacher wants you to say? Shouldn`t it be more than just learning by rote a number of acronyms like PEA or PETAL or PEZL that don`t seem to make much difference and certainly don`t help students to get the top grades?
I believe English is really just the study of humanity. When we study English, we explore who we are and the stories that we live. Every character can be a means to explore what makes us human, from our dark side to our ambitious side to our loving side to the side that gets scared and feels powerless. I know that a number of my students have certainly felt this way before when it comes to English at school.
Students so often feel disconnected from the subject. They feel like English is something done to them - something they have no choice in. Many enjoyed the subject in primary school but have now lost that love. Secondary school seems to lose some of the magic from the stories. But when students find how to connect again with the subject, they flourish. That`s where I can help. Sure, I can show how to write, or plan, or explain, but I can also help them care.
English is a chance to define ourselves, to work out who we are, what we value or desire, what we believe - more than that, it is the chance to express ourselves.
I`m an enthusiastic, passionate, and experienced English teacher who has helped countless students not only excel in English but flourish in their confidence and their independence. I also have years of experience as an examiner so can give specific, targeted and helpful guidance across every area of English.
With tried and tested tools to cover every part of English, I make sure that the students and families I work with are supported and prepared.
I am also passionate about psychology and philosophy and how these can help take our understanding of literature to the next level - the exam boards are looking for students who are capable of being nuanced and conceptual and my way works to help students achieve exactly this.
Previous tutees have gone from hating English to wanting to take the subject at A level! I break down the subject into manageable chunks so students can see how they are progressing and which skills they are focusing on - this gives them a real sense of achievement. More than that, I break down the very skills of thinking, showing students how to arrive at their own sophisticated ideas without needing to parrot others.

Availability: I am currently fully booked for all after-school and weekend tutoring, however I am currently taking reservations for June 2026 onwards.
I can offer tutoring in half terms as well.
I can also offer sessions during the daytime for students that are home-schooled.
Willing to travel: Home Only
Experience: I have been an examiner for both Language and Literature, have been both an academic and a pastoral leader in an outstanding secondary school and have been a private tutor for over 5 years. I am experienced in teaching English Literature and Language to the entire age and ability range, and will happily personalise any programme to suit the individual needs of the student.
I have extensive experience with students from a range of backgrounds. Some students have gone from getting Grade 3s at school to achieving Grade 7s in their GCSEs in a single year; others have taken to writing essays for fun (I`m not kidding!) or writing their own novels and poetry books. Whilst 100% of the students I tutor pass with flying colours, over 75% have achieved Grade 7 or higher in last year`s exams (with a number achieving double Grade 9!).
I am constantly seeking to better my tuition and I hope to make it an enjoyable experience for all my students!

Martin is an outstanding, highly organised English tutor, whose enthusiasm for literature has even inspired my dyslexic and school-averse 15-year-old to engage thoughtfully with Shakespeare and enjoy his sessions. Thank you for the rigorous lessons and well-structured feedback! I am very glad we found Martin and have no hesitation in recommending him wholeheartedly.
