Information about Luke

Through my experience of teaching Civil Engineering at Imperial College London for the past 22 years, I have acquired both practical knowledge and the skills to teach students the principles of mathematics and their application. I cover all of the core mathematics of the syllabuses and I specialise in mechanics due to my engineering experience. My many years of teaching experience at university level has also allowed me to adapt my ways of teaching to the needs of the students way of learning to bring out their full potential. With that, I like to ensure that the students understands the techniques and principles rather than just memorising different methods.

I am always described as very approachable and understanding of students problems, and given my practical engineering background I can normally always put the academic problem in some form of real world application which I have found better motivates students learning and understanding. I have also found that this helps to better motivate and stimulate students to develop a more inquisitive mind. I have also now gone part-time at Imperial College and devoting more time to students I tutor.

Availability: My availability varies from term to term but I am fairly flexible both during the week and at weekends close to my home. I now teach on a part time basis at Imperial College and will also be able to offer tutoring on certain days in the SW7 area of London.

Willing to travel: 5 miles

Experience: I have over 28 years of teaching experience at university level where I have taught mechanics, design and numerical methods. This has involved using many of the techniques the students study at A level mathematics applied to solving real engineering problems. Much of the pure maths taught at A level is used in the mechanics courses I have been involved with such as calculus, vectors, trigonometric functions, matrices to name but a few of the topics.

I have also tutored A level and GCSE mathematics to a number of students in the past 4 years and am familiar with all the new syllabuses, including Edexcel and OCR.
