Information about Lewis
I was inspired to teach by the efforts of two unique, innovative people I was fortunate enough to meet during my formative years in primary school. The lasting impact that these caring, compassionate and creative teachers had was to nurture a love of learning in their students, something I always aspire to in my work with young people.
After graduating with my PGCE (with a specialism in Childrens Literature) from Londons Institute of Education, I worked in Hackney and Southwark schools for five years before relocating with my family back to Cornwall in 2016 and working within two primary schools within the local area. I am passionate about teaching English and Maths and have been English/Literacy Coordinator in three separate schools. Now based in St. Ives, but having lived away from Cornwall for 11 years, I have a wealth of experience to share.
Unlocking the potential of young people requires being able to celebrate their successes but also the capacity to carefully listen to their difficulties and frustrations. Barriers to their learning and progress can then be addressed and overcome. The opportunities afforded by online platforms for learning means that I have been able to use my teaching skills and knowledge to work with students around the country and world, as well as within my local area.
Of utmost importance, when teaching anything, I feel it is vital to be able to bring that subject to life in a way that makes the learning memorable. When we think back to our own learning, we all have vivid memories of certain lessons; this is where learning came to life for us and this is what, as teachers, we should be aiming for every day.
When not teaching, I love to be out and about, exploring Cornwall and all its hidden gems with my young family. I am also a footballer, surfer and DJ in whatever spare time is available!
Availability: I am available for tutoring work on Monday - Thursday between 10am and midday and between 3pm and 7pm. I am also available all day on Sundays.
Willing to travel: 15 miles
Experience: Whilst training to be a teacher at the Institute of Education, University of London, I was fortunate enough to learn in the dynamic and challenging borough of Hackney, working across schools in the Primary Advantage Federation.
I then took my first full-time teaching post working at Keyworth Primary School in Southwark. I was delighted to become Literacy Coordinator and further school projects including the building and running of a new school library as well as the implementation of schemes including the Reading Buddies initiative with Bank of New York Mellon volunteers and collaboration with IntoUniversity, with the aim of improving life chances for pupils for pupils in deprived areas.
After relocating with my family, I enjoyed working as both a Key Stage leader and English and Literacy leader/coordinator in both Pensans CP and Gulval schools in West Cornwall. In the former role, I was delighted to oversee a major improvement in school results over the two-year period; Maths in particular seeing a 33% rise in pass rate.
Over the past year, I have used my skills to tutor students including focused GCSE tuition and overseas work. I hope to also be able to help your child achieve their potential and goals.
