I am an English tutor and author with over 30 years of teaching experience, including many years of lecturing, course design and examining experience at major UK universities. I’m also a GCSE/A Level examiner and moderator with Cambridge Assessment (OCR and CAIE qualifications) and have taught at many levels of age, ability and subject experience. I embrace a welcoming, collaborative approach to teaching in which students actively engage in the learning process, assured that their ideas are welcomed, valued, and encouraged. I’ve found over the years that a friendly, welcoming and constructive teaching environment enables students to grow in confidence and develop their interpretive and communicative skills most effectively. Confidence is key to learning, and I engender this both in reading literary texts and writing about their themes, ideas, values and contexts.

I was Visiting Fellow at Oxford University in 2000 and I am the author of the book, ‘The Man who would be Kipling: The Colonial Fiction and the Frontiers of Exile’ (Palgrave Macmillan, 2003).

Experience: I have taught for over 30 years from secondary to degree level. I also worked as a lecturer at the University of Leicester, Loughborough University and The Open University. As mentioned, I am currently an examiner with Cambridge Assessment and can offer valuable guidance on exam preparation for students sitting GCSEs and A Levels. I am also familiar with the course requirements of most UK universities and keep up to date with the syllabuses of the other main Examination Boards for English at GCSE and A-Level.
