Information about Jemma

I am friendly, personable tutor looking to help students improve their scientific understanding by providing high quality tuition that engages and motivates students in a subject I am passionate about!

First a little about me, I am a graduate of the University of Dundee with a 2:1 (Hons) in Biological chemistry and Drug Discovery. After completing my degree I taught EFL abroad and provided Science tutoring in a tuition centre before coming back to the UK to complete my PGCE and gain Qualified Teacher Status as a KS3 - KS5 Science Teacher.
My teaching experience across many different classroom settings has made me an adaptable and dynamic tutor who is able to help students from varied backgrounds access the content I am teaching.

My approach to tutoring is to get to know the individual and spend time identifying their interests, motivations, areas of strength and areas for improvement. This helps me to tailor my lessons to suit the needs of the student. I use formative and summative assessments to track student progress and provide valuable feedback to support learning.
when teaching I like to use a range of activities in my lessons including: whiteboard `show me` questions, check for understanding quizzes, knowledge organisers, animations and draw-it-out activities and exam practice questions and many more. It is important that students are not only able to recall information but to apply it in different contexts.

Every lesson begins with recall questions from the previous topic/lesson to ensure that content is retained over time. Following on from this students are introduced to the learning objective so they have a clear view of what we are trying to achieve in a lesson and how we will measure whether we have achieved the objective at the end. Learning is not a passive process, students need to have a firm understanding of the purpose of the lesson so they can be active participants in it.
Next, I introduce the lesson content and provide real life examples to make the abstract more concrete in the mind of the learner and avoid cognitive overload. Activities are used to check student understanding before moving on to the next part of the lesson where students, with my help, practice applying what they have learned before finally moving onto independent practice that I will mark and provide feedback on before the end of the lesson.
Finally, Students will complete a small end of lesson quiz to assess the effectiveness of learning and identify any gaps to be addressed in subsequent lessons.

If you are interested in my tutoring services please get in touch, I look forward to hearing from you!
