Information about Shane
Hello
My name is Shane and I am a tutor with a breadth of knowledge and considerable experience both in academia and practice.
Having left school with eight GCSEs, including English, Speaking and Listening, Maths, Geography, D&T Resistant Materials Technology, Physical Education, Information Technology, Catering and a young enterprise award, I entered the workforce before deciding I wanted to improve my prospects further by pursuing a degree in interdisciplinary/applied social sciences (BA Community and Social Care: Policy and Practice.. Having successfully completed this degree I then transitioned straight to postgraduate education and completed my Postgraduate Diploma in Social Work building on the knowledge already gained.
In 2009, I embarked on pursuing my BA Degree in Community and Social Care: Policy and Practice as the name suggests this is an applied social science degree focussing on citizenship and social issues through the study and application of social science disciplines of sociology, psychology, criminology, political science, social work, education, economics, education and history.
This applied social science degree developed my in-depth understanding of social justice, social exclusion and social inequality, preparing me for a challenging career in the community and social care sector.
Key skills enhanced include: Inter-personal, problem solving, multi-tasking, presentation, communication, research abilities.
Modules Covered Include: Personal & Professional Development; Social Policy: Politics & Citizenship; The British Welfare State; Community Services for Children & Adults; Divisions in Society; Gang and Gun Culture; Community and Care Practice; Power, Oppression & Society; Critical Reading and Research; Drugs and Society; Youth Matters; Comparative Social Welfare; Racism and Social Welfare; Crime and Society; Mental Health and Social Welfare; Applied Community Practice: Research & Development; Critical Social Policy.
3rd Year Dissertation: A Critical Evaluation of the Effects of Institutional Care on Childrens Mental Health
I also hold a Postgraduate Diploma (Equivalent to MA degree in Social Work) which has further enhanced my knowledge on policy, legislation and systems of service delivery, issues of power and oppression, as well as community cohesion and human and social needs, all with an emphasis on delivering strength based and child-centred practice.
This degree provided an in-depth understanding of social justice, social exclusion, social inequality, race and ethnicity, mental health, people with learning disabilities, physical disabilities, youth studies, social pedagogy, safeguarding and substance misuse, which has prepared me for a challenging career in the social care sector and given me a broad knowledge base to draw on where necessary.
Im a big believer in education being accessible to everyone regardless of ability level and background.
For this reason, I understand that students, both young and mature, need to learn in ways best suited to them. Learning doesnt have to be boring it can be made simple and fun.
