Since graduating in 2009 with a Masters in Maths from Durham, I have worked as a secondary school Maths teacher. My experience is varied, including inner city comprehensives, prestigious international schools and high achieving private schools. I have taught A Level, IB, GCSE (both modular and linear) and IGCSE. In my nine year career, I have worked with a huge range of students, diverse in background, ability and attitude. In my free time, I enjoy running, cycling, spending time with my young family (and dog), and studying foreign languages.
Availability: During holiday time, I am very flexible. I can work most mornings and evenings during the week, as well as any time on a weekend.
During term time, I am restricted to evenings and weekends.
Currently I cannot do Tuesday evenings.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience: My first teaching experiences were while I was at university. I worked as a teaching assistant in a local secondary school, and also volunteered for a student led charity which involved working in a South African primary school for three months. Upon graduation, I completed the Teach First scheme, which involves working in challenging inner city schools full time while also studying for your PGCE. I stayed at my Teach First school for three years, before doing a year in a state school in London. A spontaneous decision to apply for an international job took me to Rio de Janeiro, where I taught for three years in a the British School Rio de Janeiro. I returned to the UK in 2016, taught for a year in a UTC in Leeds, before moving to Oxford where I currently teach at Magdalen College School.
My approach to tutoring is identical to my approach to class room teaching, where I strive to be a positive, encouraging and enthusiastic presence. Seeing students progress and grow in confidence gives me a real buzz, and hopefully my students see this and appreciate my lessons. I set high expectations for my students, and try to ensure they understand why they are doing something, rather than what they need to do. My tutoring sessions include homework, and I am available by email to support or mark work before the next session.

review(s) for Michael.
Michael is an excellent maths teacher. We are delighted to have found him. Our son has found the lessons immensely useful. Mike comes prepared, paces the lessons well and is really good at explaining maths concepts. He is also communicative when planning lesson dates and times etc.
