Information about Umran

I am currently in my final year of an undergraduate degree at SOAS, University of London for BA Arabic and History. In the period of September 2019 - June 2020, I studied advanced levels of Classical, Modern Standard, and Jordanian Colloquial Arabic in Amman, Jordan at the Qasid Arabic Institute as a core part of my degree. As a native English speaker who has studied Arabic to an advanced level, I am keenly aware of solutions to the particular challenges that an English speaker may face in studying Arabic.

I have previously given tuition to individuals and small groups of students at varying levels, and have received positive feedback for my warm approach, which has always been tailor-made to suit the students’ specific level and requirements. This is attained by a short conversation to assess the student’s goals, which then enables us to construct a specific program to suit their needs.

I greatly enjoy teaching and my approach is to offer the appropriate support and encouragement for students and guide them towards solving problems for themselves, rather than simply providing them with the answers. I find this to be the most rewarding approach for students, as it raises their confidence and ensures that they have correctly understood the content before progressing onto more advanced levels.

Experience: Volunteered as a PASS Leader in my university during the second year of my degree. This involved holding weekly one hour sessions with a group of first-year undergraduates. I would lead them in revising the content they had covered in the previous week and assisted them with designing efficient study methods, as well as preparing them for term and final exams.

Volunteered with CoachBright as a coach in William Morris Sixth Form. The coaching role is a mix of tutoring and mentoring. Coached an A-Level Psychology student for one hour a week over the course of a school term in which we covered: approaches, research methods, and social influence.
