Information about Sarah

My name is Sarah and I graduated with a First Class BA in Law from Fitzwilliam College, the University of Cambridge in 2018.

I`m a friendly, bubbly, tutor, who believes that support and encouragement are essential in helping students reach their potential. There are no stupid questions in my tutorial sessions, which focus on building your essay writing confidence

I also studied for an Erasmus year in international human rights law at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands in 2017.

I attained 3 A* grades at A Level in English literature, Geology and French. I received 100% UMS marks in A Level English Literature.

I am a creative writer represented by PFD agents and a journalist with writing in the Guardian, the i paper and Metro.

I can thus offer a fresh and professional approach to tutoring English Literature to GCSE and A level.

I also specialise in helping undergraduate Law students with their academic legal writing and answering essay questions.

I tailor my sessions to your current study needs and in the opening session we will determine which areas you are finding most challenging.

Availability: Available on weekday evenings, Tuesday 9-5 and Wednesday 2-5.

Experience: The biggest challenge students face when answering essay-based questions is formulating a clear argument.

Instead many students produce an interesting, but meandering summary of their knowledge on the topic.

When facing a essay question, it`s important to pause, take a step back and consider the question, rather than launching into an exposition of all your knowledge on the topic.

The key to a first class mark is taking the step beyond stating the facts and engaging critically with the question to generate an argument. Students often worry a lot about structure, but once you have your argument in mind, the process of structuring your essay to support that argument becomes much easier.

Let`s take an example question for Law:

"Does the ECHR go far enough to protect the family life of foreign nationals who have been convicted of criminal offences?"

When faced with this kind of question, good students will often identify the relevant areas of law, such as Article 8 of the European Convention on Human Rights and the issues arising, such as deportation.

However, they will often then use the question as an opportunity to regurgitate everything they have learnt about Article 8 in lectures, throwing away their chance of attaining a higher mark.

However thorough and well-structured your exposition is, you cannot reach a first class mark by simply outlining the law on the topic - you must create an argument that answers the question to access the highest marks.

Here, the question is very closed - it`s a yes or no question. To answer it, the student must take a position and use the knowledge they have to back that position up, whilst recognising the limitations of their argument.

Often, examiners will use more open questions, such as, "To what extent does the the ECHR protect the family life of foreign nationals who have been convicted of criminal offences ?" These questions invite a more nuanced response, that requires the student not to formulate a yes or no answer, put to pitch their answer along a sliding scale.

When making your essay plan, start by asking yourself two questions: `what do I think?` and `what examples can I use to back up what I think?`

Taking this step, rather than launching headfirst into your summary of the law, can allow you to craft an essay that truly contributes to the debate. My tutoring sessions focus on helping law students write with flair and clarity in response to essay based questions.

I can help you with:
A Level English Literature
