Information about Thomas
I am an enthusiastic teacher with over six years of teaching experience across a range of age groups and subjects. I am a full-time teacher of Physics and an experienced tutor of sciences, mathematics, Mandarin and Japanese.
As a teacher of physical sciences and mathematics, I am committed to developing the understanding of my students in a systematic and engaging way. I currently teach Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics to students at all stages of the English national curriculum, from KS1 to A Level, and enjoy providing creative as well as results-driven lessons to my students. My initial teaching training at age 19 (Cert. TESOL) forms the basis for my approach to language teaching, and I have developed a wide bank of materials for teaching students of all ages and abilities.
Please enquire for further details of my teaching experience.
Availability: I am usually available on weekdays after 4pm.
Willing to travel: 5 miles
Experience: I have experience of teaching a range of subjects to students of all ages and abilities, in a variety of group and one-to-one settings. I currently teach students at all levels of the national curriculum, students from international backgrounds, and adult learners with a range of business and personal requirements. I greatly enjoy the opportunity and the challenge to participate in the provision of education in a variety of contexts.
My first professional experience of teaching was at age nineteen in Japan, where I worked for a year as a teacher of English: this has ingrained in my praxis an approach to clear communication and language which has proven valuable in teaching a wider range of languages and subjects. I started studying Japanese in secondary school at age 14, and went on to compete in national and international speaking competitions. I studied Oriental Studies at Oxford and currently teach Mandarin and Japanese to primary, secondary and adult-learner students.
As a self-employed tutor, I have relished the opportunity to teach a variety of subjects at to learners from very different backgrounds. I have supported students in London for several years - indeed I have taught and mentored my longest-running pupils for over four years now - and have gained an overview of both primary and secondary school curricula in English, Maths and Science. I have developed programmes of study for students sitting GCSEs and A-levels, and for younger learners applying to schools at 11+, for example.
In doing so, I have enjoyed the challenge of adding breadth and depth to students` understanding, whilst maintaining a results-driven approach. I particularly love developing creative exercises and activities to help learners relate new topics to other areas of their experience.
Most recently, as a full-time teacher of secondary Physics, I have sought to empower young people with the same love of learning as I have benefitted from in my own experience, and with a fascination for the beauty of Nature as described by mathematics. At the same time, I have been able to draw on my experience as an online tutor to respond to the needs of learners around the world as a result of school closures.
