Information about James
I am a recent graduate of the University of Oxford, having achieved a First Class Honours degree in Philosophy, Politics and Economics.
I have experience tutoring maths at GCSE and A-level through another tutoring agency, with my students frequently improving their grades. I also have a TEFL qualification, having spent eight weeks teaching in China. Within my lessons, I cater to each student`s individual needs, focussing on any content they find difficult, and trying to place each topic within the broader subject area. I have found this approach not only facilitates a greater understanding of the subject but helps to show why it is such a fascinating and important area of study!
I have tutored economics up to degree level, designing lessons to cover both the explanation of theoretical concepts and the application of economics to exam-style questions. Given my background, I am comfortable covering both the nuances of writing a strong essay, as well as focussing on the more technical aspects of the subject.
I am equally comfortable tutoring politics up to degree level. Whilst taking a slightly different approach to teaching each of these subjects, my ethos remains broadly the same.
I am currently studying for a law conversion, having received a training contract offer with an international law firm. I am therefore uniquely placed to understand the best way of approaching studying and preparing for exams online.
Willing to travel: 10 miles
Experience:
I have tutored GCSE and A-level students with a tuition agency, and I am fully DBS checked.
Teaching English in a Foreign Language (TEFL) in China (July 2018-August 2018):
I earned a TEFL certification through teaching in China across an eight-week period. This involved providing two-hour-long classes, working closely with an interpreter, twice a day, along with 60 hours of coursework over the duration of the project. I was voted as the highest performing tutor out of a group of 6 by the camp’s attendees, and was nominated to a leadership role in the camps, liaising between the other volunteers and the organisation we were working for.
Jack Petchey Achievement Award, Cricket Coaching (June 2016)
I coached younger members of my local cricket club, receiving an award by the Jack Petchey Foundation for my efforts.
The Financial Conduct Authority, Summer Associate (June 2019-August 2019)
I worked for ten weeks within the regulator’s Investment, Wholesale and Specialist Supervision Division, rotating between teams focused on US wholesale banks and the FCA’s Supervisory Framework. From this, I received an offer to return on the regulator’s 2020 Graduate Programme.
