Information about Sarah
I am a first class Geography graduate from the University of Exeter, and I specialise in tutoring Geography, History, Philosophy and Ethics, and English to students across a range of abilities.
Willing to travel: 50 miles
Experience: In my experience, learning is made easier, and more exciting if taught by someone with a real engagement with the chosen subject. Teaching in this way inspires students, and the link between enthusiastic teaching and student achievement cannot be underestimated. As a tutor, I feel that I do not just possess the subject content and knowledge required to teach, but more importantly the enthusiasm and drive to motivate students into achieving their best. I am able to reflect this energy and drive in my lesson plans and methods of teaching. I will spend time shaping lesson plans which are personalised, and tailored around the individual student and their needs, whether this be a focus on essay technique, or course content.
I am able to communicate with, and teach students from Primary school level (SATS), to the end of Secondary school (A-Levels), however my ability to teach at various levels is subject-dependent. I can confidently teach Humanities (Geography, History and Philosophy) from Primary to A-Level standard, and English to a KS3 level.
Whilst in Sixth Form I mentored KS3 students in English and Geography. This role supported in-class teaching, for example, I read students work and coursework and provided individual feedback to improve their grade. If students were confused by an in-class explanation, I would clarify course content on a one to one basis, building on the original explanation. I also assisted with essay technique, giving guidance on paragraph structures and the necessary answer content for past paper questions. I also have experience working and communicating with children aged 7-10, as I volunteered as a girl guiding leader for 2 years at Brownies. This required simple clear communication skills and the ability to instruct and lead large groups of children, but also to have fun and engage them in activities.
As a first class University of Exeter graduate, I constantly observed and practising all of the skills that I would use to teach to students as a tutor. I am in touch with the learning process, and hence can empathise with students and pass on techniques for revising and learning that I have acquired and are fresh in my memory. Therefore, I am a confident communicator with the ability to empathise with students, and formulate effective methods for learning dependent upon individual needs.
